In an age where you can get a whole week's worth of nutrition for less than 10$,
It is easiest to start with the extreme "charge for weight" and confront their wallets.

the problem with the whiners about government takeover is the fact that they don't do anything to solve the problem themselves or as a society. And when the government tries to control sodium/sugar intake by making a law, people start raging. Guess what, the government subsidizes saccharine so that it keeps prices low, the government subsidizes corn, the government controls/subsidizes a ton of food products or food sources, not to mention maintaining FEDERAL inspections and FEDERAL food standards that foodmakers must follow.

It's a shade of gray, it's not that I don't think government intervention is wrong in ALL cases, only some. Making sure food is not sold laced with salmonella is fine. Telling me I can't eat an excess of sugar, not fine. If I want to knowingly harm myself, ok. Does this make me a hypocrite? Nope, it makes me someone who weighs each issue and then forms an opinion. Not some 'this or that' attitude. You may not agree with me, but please don't assume my position on other issues based on my standing with this one.

Yes they can keep a Food standard or even inspect the food they aren't really messing with our life directly they are just making healthier food. but they are not controlling the sodium or sugar intake they are telling you to stop being FAT!! There is a HUGE difference, some people can go eat that sandwich at KFC where the chicken is the bun (forgot what it is called) which is a calorie bomb, and still not gain a single pound at the end of the day. Then there are those who eat a regular 2500 calorie diet and still gain weight. Now for these people losing weight is hard, not only do they have to go on a very strict diet but they also have to exercise. Now imagine a Single mom who has a kid who works for around 8 hours a day. She sleeps about 8 hours, makes lunch/dinner for her son and herself which takes about 1hr. Eats which is probably around 2hrs if you add all 3 meals. It takes her about 15 mins to go to work and 15 mins to come back. She takes an hour doing household chores. now she has like 3 hours left do you really think in these 3 hrs she wants to workout??

wow...thats a giant load of bullshit because americans just keep getting fatter even if its unhealthy. This is even more ironic because healthcare cost have been increasing in the states across the board as well. So yeah, left to their own devices people will get fat and pay far out the ass to try and stave off the death and disease brought on by their unhealthy lifestyle.

Personally i like that japan is doing this. It shows concern for the well being of its citizens. Just like there;s a dress and behavior code at work you shouldn't be allowed to show up disgusting and overweight and companies shouldn't create an environment that perpetuates that kind of lifestyle. Does it impede on your civil liberties a bit? Only in the same way a dress/behavior code does. I'm reminded of John Doe's rant from Se7en
