seriously $80 will go a long way towards a better computer, not talking something fantastic but something better trust me. Sit down do some research find out what price the computers are out there that suit your needs and work out how long its gona take you to get it, im sure you can wait a little while longer
it will take awhile before i get the money to buy a computer with the i5 or i7 it goes into the $800+ range (for the p55 chipset)
this computer could last me until then but still i don't know

plz stop mentioning i7, there is nothing in it for you but cost. the misinformation that exists about this subject is kinda upsetting at times.

is it good or should i change something? about the graphics too i only plan on using my 19" as a computer screen so not much power is needed (and i don't plan on playing cysis)
[SD]Master_Wong wrote: to keep it going for the next couple of years its gona be more then $80 tbh after seeing the specs id upgrade and keep the new computer up-to-date
look at it this way first ram upgrade, then hard drive, then processor and with that motherboard and new ram as DDR is old and expensive then graphics card although id do that before processor tho some gfx cards require a certain amount of processing power to work
anyways get my point?
i get your point but i was planning to get the i5 or i7 because the 775 socket is also becoming outdated. but if i get this ram upgrade it will at least do semi gaming then use it for office work for the next 5 years or so

It's amazing what a non-Windows OS will do to give an old computer new life. Amarisa stated wanting to use the computer for office work for the next 5 years, after getting a little more gaming out of it. If you max out the RAM on it (2 gigs DDR from newegg for $55) it might get a little more gaming out of it for a while.
Then wipe the drive and install Puppy Linux (only about 120 megs for the entire distribution, apps included). It runs completely out of RAM so it is quite fast. It can run OpenOffice I believe, although that will bump up the storage requirements. It would work quite well for general office work for several years.

well the computer i am using now once i get a good gaming one ill use this old guy for office work like bills and word. then just leave it offline for the rest of the time and probably do what PR0METHEUS was talking about install linux and get more years out of it.
also PR0METHEUS is there a linux os that is more to the gaming side? or do you just install wine on all of them and it runs the same?

im not an ati fan either but its no worse then saying im not a ps3, i have my reasons for it im sure they do makes neither of us retarded, as for them they came here asking for advice on a subject they didnt know i added some insight based on what i thought i knew regardles of whether it was right or wrong
you on the other hand came here and called me and him a retard i see no reason for this and unlea your going expand your points gtfo before i start finding MORE reasons to call you retarded
Love wrote:you are retarded and so is he/she, "i am not an ati fan" does it for me...
i didnt say that in this post, even so i prefer nVidia and its no worse then saying im not a ps3 fan does not make me retarded nor does it make them retarded, as for them they came here asking for advice on a subject they didnt know i added some insight based on what i thought i knew regardles of whether it was right or wrong
you on the other hand came here and called me and him a retard i see no reason for this and unlea your going expand your points gtfo before i start digging up your post history because il do a lot worse
do it, let me see you behave as what you repeated, in fact i am dying to see what your pathetic self thinks will do with my post history.

lol that part i amended after i decided to re-read the thread a lil i was under the impression you dug up my history as iv said that before, non the less gives you no right to call any of us retarded
Love wrote:you are retarded and so is he/she, "i am not an ati fan" does it for me...
all i have used is nvidia and honestly whats wrong with going with what works? i used a ati card before was not bad but not good also.
and before the whole nvidia vs ati gets going i am going to say that i'm deciding on getting a 9800 gt or a 4770 (unless that 4870 is also around the same price but cant tell because newegg is out). read a few reviews and said the 4770 outclasses the 9800 gt and is about the same price.
well now that you ruined my fun by deciding not to amuse me by attacking essentially nothing ill elaborate a bit on why i think you and him are retarded. ill use the following analogy to portrait my point, why would you pay more for this 1 than you would for this 1...
and just like that i have nothing else to say... oh wait this story gets better, the less expensive "1" runs circles around the other which leads me to my final point... you lack common sense.
ok so the internet hating was starting to ramp up by the time i decided to write this line so ill just say this. no, high end pcs dont have to cost "£1000 mark thats about $1500", this is what ticked my off to go after you because for the past few years high end gaming has been available for under $1000 but people like you simply spread around misinformation and set standards that arent good for us the consumer. i wont elaborate on why i would care to defend that but know that you are surely entitled to say w/e you want regardless of how factual it is but ... just like you are entitled to say anything people are entitled to call you out on it so the next time it happens dont cry about it.

its a fucking estimated price you pillock! note the word mark, its about the same as saying about £1000 not exactly, anyways let me go on, ATI and nVidia have pros and cons which benefit some people and not so much others someone working in the film industry is going to use a different card from a gamer, generally nVidia offers better support to gamers and for me thats what i want, but its not to say the ATI card wont be able to do a good job but not better ofc this depends on the card your using.

can't you just say your reasons why ati is better? and avoid calling people retards? honestly i like nvidia because so far they have not let me down. also there way of getting drivers seems much more simple then ati's (though i only had a few occasions where i tried to get drivers from ati). there is more to it then price you know....
Amarisa wrote:also PR0METHEUS is there a linux os that is more to the gaming side? or do you just install wine on all of them and it runs the same?
Wine seems to run about the same for me on pretty much any Linux. Some distributions of Linux may not have the latest wine version though. As was suggested above, I'd say go with Ubuntu and wine. Wine won't support every Windows game out there, but it supports a lot of them.
Silkroad Online works quite nicely in wine... better than in XP, at least on older hardware. I can run detailed shadows on an athlon xp 3200+ with only 512 megs of ram.
Also, Linux does have a nice list of games that run natively (without wine). Check it out here:
