I would of stopped for the cat.
I don't give a shit if it's stray or not.

Re: Car accident..
Other then that the guy whom sped away is a cock, stopping for an animal isn't a bad thing. They all deserve to live tbh.
The fact that you couldn't stop in time, means you didn't keep enough distance to the car in front of you. Which, alltough it sucks, is your own fault.
3 second rule, anyone? (It's 3 seconds, not one-car length, or any of that rubbish).

Re: Car accident..
I was always taught the 3 sec rule, but I increase it by a LOT when its raining and get pretty angry when people behind me don't do the same... It's an easy way to be sure you have control of the situation if something like the OP described happens.
As for animals... depends. If someone is on my tail I'll give my brakes a tap and hope the animal gets out of the way in time.. if not, oh well. If Im alone I'll try a little harder not to hit it. Either way, NEVER turn the wheel / "swerve" to miss an animal unless you like losing control of your vehicle. My life and the people in the car's lifes > animals life. That's just how it works.

one car length sure as hell isn't 4 seconds.
Lol indeed. I understand if you slow down if you see something at the sidewalk, but if there's someone behind you in the rain you shouldn't just slam the breaks lol. It was probably a woman =/ (no offense but women tend to stop or go wide around animals etc)

Props to chrisorg for the sig <3

Its talking relatively. You have only two ways to swerve to avoid an object - if you turn one way, you'll hit a human being, and if you turn another way, you'll end up hitting a squirrel. Obviously you'd turn to hit the squirrel. I love animals too, but in society people lives =/= animal lives.

Though in this case, none of that applies. The guy in front of him, could stop in time, he wasn't keeping enough distance, and crashed.

I'm glad car and health insurances are obligatory in the Netherlands.
Considering proper insurance costs around 3 times (about £5000 more in my case) the amount of a young person's car normally, i dont think it really would of made it any better.
Well for the UK at least.
I'm pretty sure insurance rates for young people are the highest in any country

Re: Car accident..
car insurance rates are insane where I live. I drive a 1999 mercury sable and my insurance cost $176 a month! I haven't had any "reported" accidents either. If I had told them my insurance rates would probably have doubled! What a load of bullshit.

The asshole who stopped short for the animal that DIDNT EVEN CROSS! sped away and left me there to wait for the dude who owns the other vehicle to come out. I was going about 30mph so im ok case you guys were wondering but my cars totalled. The other car, well truck is fine my car went under his so he just has an F'ed up rear bumper. I was on my way home FROM THE AUTO SHOP when this happened, its back at the shop now were my mechanic will deciede its fate. im feeling pretty bummed, i mean i only have one car and dont have the cash for another, anyone else have an experience like this?
And please if your just gunna post something along the lines of owned and/or pwned plz do so in an epic manner so your just not the idiot stating the obvious that i got owned...
Sorry to hear about your accident. I'm not saying this is the case with you, but quite often people just follow too close behind other vehicles, especially for the road conditions.
Last week I was in an accident on the way into work. Someone hit the rear end of our van pretty hard, hit and run. We caught up to the guy off the next exit where he was "hoping we'd find" him. If he wasn't travelling so close to us, he'd be able to slow down and avoid the collision.
