Heh, more than a few girls/ladies/women have self-esteem issues. If they're not a perfect 36-24-36 or have the face of Angelina Jolie or whoever is currently "hot" in the news, they think they're ugly.
Personally getting involved in what she likes to do and then getting to be close friends seemed to work better for me. Of course you don't want to say something like "it doesn't matter what you look like, I still like/trust/care for you" if she does have those types of issues; it would just make it worse. (Also, it's not much fun if, for example, you're a devoutly religious person and she hates religion, or if you're passionate about politics but she's not.)
Then again, half the time you get the "but we're just friends, I'm scared to escalate it to more in case we break up and can't be friends anymore" stuff. Sometimes I've been, errr...lovers with a woman but later on we end it and we've successfully stayed close friends.
I say, whatever. Life is no fun unless you take a few risks and experience downs as well as wonderful times. And you can't always succeed in relationships. All you can do is try
If faith is a crutch, I'm not limping anymore.
