i've got to say though, the importance of college depends on what situation you're in. literally, the only reason you go to college is to get a higher end job then the average joe, and make more money. just because one went to college for 4+ years doesn't make him much better off than someone who dropped out of highschool as long as they are both making the same amount of money.. and it's quite possible to make money without a college degree.

f your an idiot or you don't care about how much money you make....even with construction it can take 25-30 years of work just the get to the same lvl of pay as a contraction guy with a diploma

oh I care about the money I make, don't question that. construction can't be your only thing in mind; open your mind, there is such a thing as an entrepreneur and not having to look up to a boss all the time.

My dad always told me: the more you go to school, the less you work.

The ones with the diplomas are the ones who sit in comfy chairs in big offices looking at charts about efficiency while the high school graduate works twelve hours a day on a press.

The statistic in Canada is an average of 10% higher pay for every extra year of education. You go from highschool to a ba and just there you have a 40% increase.

But, but... Indians are Asian tooo. :[

OnT: Dropping out? Honestly, that's never even crossed my mind before. Ever. Well, yes, it's fleeted across my mind before, but thinking that I would drop out after 16 is like thinking that one day, I'm going to be the President of the US - it just isn't going to happen (I wasn't born in America).

So no. I'd never drop out. I'm hoping to get into a good college, maybe an Ivy League one, although I really want to go to somewhere in California.

And what makes you think I want to sit in in a round table full of people that I don't know yet they lick my butt? Besides the whole "I ignore my family", do you know how horrible it is for a kid to grow up with a business man as a father? Belive me that leaves a scar for the rest of your life.

Do you know what my job is all about? Taking 50-60 pictures a day of several different items and being on live help for 3 hours a day, everything from my place, and I do all that while I play SilkRoad or chat on aim or msn.. if that's hard work, I'm Michael Jackson in Thriller.

Also... and do what, exactly? grow old without any life experience? Making your children go to school and follow your same career as the vicious circle continues? Nah buddy, there's more to see, I'm sticking with the "I am my own boss" point of view

It's all about what you want out of life.

If you're so insecure that you'll go to college and waste 4 years of your life learning something you hate because you want people to think highly of you, then you really shouldn't be saying shit to someone who just dropped out of high school and has a decent job. And vice versa. There's cases where people make tons of money whether they go to college or not, it just depends on what you want to do, and what you can do.

but im willing to bet you don't even bring in something close to six figures a year. I don't think corporate CEO's care about someone who takes pictures because in a capitalist society theres at least 500 ppl out there willing to do your job for probably alot less and work harder at it (like not playing silkroad and chatting on MSN while working)

You seem defensive. To be honest, I don't care what you want to do with your life, I was just contributing my view to the discussion. The first thing we learned in academics was to discuss.

Either way, the reason why I wish to be office-bound is simple. I want to be able to provide. I want to make lots of money, I want to make enough money to be able to buy my kids everything they deserve; to be able to allow my wife to stay home with my children; to allow me to put him in the best schools; to assure me that a lack of cash will never cut short their potential; and finally, to allow me to retire young. Retiring young allows me to truly live life; to not worry about having to go back to work on monday, or go paycheck to paycheck. In today's world, being financially secure is something that is required. I rather go to school for a couple extra years and not have to stay awake all night worrying about how i'm going to feed my family.

I'm 18 years old, if I had 6 figures a year I wouldn't be here right now. But hey how knows, in ten year you might be in your small *yet comfy* dentist office with your clients and your rutine day, and I could be I don't know.. taking a close look at he world out there, not having to worry every single day about the bills, etc. or vise-versa.
What I'm trying to say is that it's okay if you want that kind of life for yourself, just don't judge other people for thinking college is for people who would like to play golf with your rich friends every weekend in 20 years.

Money is only money, and it won't go anywhere with you after you pass away, so why bother working so hard to make more money than you'll ever spend? It's kinda pointless, imo.

rofl, if you think school is hard work, wait untill you get a shitty job, because you don't have a diploma.

school is work, yes, but see it this way:

work hard now, relax later

I am living in Canada and studying Life Sciences right now in Ryerson university.

My family owns a business and earn about 2m a year. Since I was 10 i realized that I liked science and that I should be a doctor or something like that in the future. I have never worked my entire life and I havent spend money like a retard.

I know how hard is to get money and how easy is to spend it. My parents care about me a lot, but they don't ask me in how or what i use my money on. I have my own debit card and it has around 10k. I dont really spend my money on anything, but clothes + ps3 games and food.

I know, that if i dropped out of university and not worked my entire life, I know tha my parents would give me money and everything they have worked hard for. When my parents were young they lived in China and they were extremely poor. They wanted improvement, so they went to another country and started working like hell (12h per day). Now they own a hugh company and they dont even work anymore, just get the money. A characteristic way of thinking of most old chinese people is that a son is more important than a daugther and whatever they parents had would go to the son and NOT to the daughter. My parents had told me that when they pass away, i will inherit everything they have.

Although you guys might be like "WTF is this guy saying".... I am trying to prove a point. Although I can live without even working, I dont wanna do that. I wanna work and live life as its maximun and do things that normal people would do. But I dont wanna work my entire life. I would probably work and retire around 40 :) and then enjoy life.

Anyways guys, I encorauge all of you to study as much as you can, cus it really helps to build your future, and contribute to who you are. Dont depends on others, but in yourself. Make your parents and friends proud of you!!

Again, college is not for everyone. If you enjoy what you do, then that's what is most important. In my eyes, success is being able to do what you love and being able to live comfortably. So basically, if you're living worry free, and you have the things you want without having to go to college, then hell yeah. More power to you!

I wanna see the world. I wanna work on computers. If I go to college, I can do both of those things by getting a job in almost any IT field. I'd make good money from a job that I love and I can use that money to go see other countries like France, Italy, Spain....etc. I don't need to be a millionaire. In fact I really don't wanna be one. I just wanna have enough money to have a nice car for me and my wife, to not have to worry about bills every month, and to be able to raise my kids the way I want to raise them, and to live in a neighborhood where I feel safe taking my dog for a walk. If I accomplish those things, I will feel that I've been successful.

Like someone said before me, it's all about what you want out of life. College doesn't guarantee success, it only gives you the opportunity.

entrepreneur, the most dangerous job in the business....can leave you dirty rich or dead broke. Unless you get a bit more expertise in college, I advise youto stay away from it. Also, getting a good job without a degree and with only a high school diploma is uncommon, so the best most can get without a diploma is flippin' burgers, and stealing fries at McDonalds.

Yeah that's pretty clear.
By the way, I might not go to college but I have a PHP programming and web design diploma, and I'm currently into videogame programming, only 7 months left, then if I get the scholarship (which I probably will) I'm going to Germany to work as level designer assistant for one whole year, but I don't think that's what I'll do to make a living, I just love programming, that's what it's all about, what you love to do. Although, you don't even get the chance to do what you really want to do, and those who can don't appreciate that much.
No clue if that made any sense to me.. I'm too tired to write in english..

for life skills and management, yes you don't really need school. But you need school to learn stuff that will help you determine a career

like learn about physics if you want to be an engineer etc

Well no, you really do need schools because schools determine what job you will get and if you'll get the job. I mean really if you have no diploma but you have the smarts and the guy you're running against for the a good job attended Stanford for college which one do you think the employer will choose? Nowadays it's all about the colleges you attended, just try to get a good job at a good company, you will see what will happen because you'll be running against alot of people from the worlds best colleges. In other words schools are there to make sure you don't have that much competition for that job, and to give you experience in the area you want to work in. People take schools for granted nowadays, I mean the teachers don't have to sit there and teach you, but your just gonna be ungrateful, they can get another job you know, another reason we need schools is that if we just took the time to go to schools and get an education there would be less crime and soicety will benefit from it. 8 out of 10 dropouts will one day grow up to be criminals statisticaly speaking.
