Extended Essay

Yes, the dreaded double E that all IB grads wish never to hear again, or those who will come to IB dread to meet.

Well, im calling out for your help guys. I got until October 16th to finish my Extended Essay. Unfortunately, my original topic was disallowed, because of some sort of clash of topics. There was someone who had already made a topic like mine but never handed it in officially, but the school had a copy, and something something... Well anyway, i got the news and, now i have to do a new topic... o yeah, in 1 month.. Which is major SUCK!

Now, the faculty said that they would help me out a little more, cuz it's unfair to me. However, now i need a topic. It needs to be in Biology, because im already down for Bio. It should be feasible to do in 1 month, and should be worth doing.

I'm in a slight state of panic. So yeah, any help guys? Seriously way appreciated.... What did you guys do for your EE? or what do you think would be a good topic.

I took pH, salinity, and *something i cant remember* readings from a nearby lake over the course of the whole summer, fall, and winter.

made graphs, pictures, observations, blah blah blah.
then i used calc or trig or whatever finding deviations and all this lame shit.

waste of time lol.
the biggest pain in the ass was during winter i had to go to the nearby salt distribution place to check how much salt they poured on the streets after snowfall >_>

i shouldve chosen something that i could bullshit in one night :banghead:

I did a transect along the coastline of devon, measuring seaweed length collected and did a chi sq from the stats. Also did some fauna sampling, which was less statistical but more descriptive as an adjunct to the main tested hypothesis. I cant remember what the original project was about, was only keen to do it cause I really liked someone on my team <.<

This was almost 10 years ago... zomg! you make me remember it!

yea they made me show all the steps for my chi sq :banghead:

took like 2 hours just to write it out.

Cancer resisting apoptosis. Chart various forms of cancer and their resistance to cell suicide over a period of time. Chemicals and medication can be changed for a response in the cancer cells. I think there are new medications coming out that artificially induces 'planned' cell death.

I did this a short while back but I worked in a NCI lab for a month and a half, I don't know if you will have enough for a EE though, you could broaden it up to apoptosis and its relation to disease in general and plot out how each different disease linked to abnormalities in apoptosis reacts.

I havent seen any drugs passing phase 1 in clinical trials that works this way. Would be a better alternative to the chemo that we have at the moment, inducing p75 expression wouldnt be a bad idea, just that specific targeting of cancer cells would be the major obstacle I would imagine. Cause if you are going down the path of using IG recognition, there are drugs that have passed through phase 1 and are already in use in bigger trials.

Off-topic: Well what I worked with was releasing controlled amounts of ce-3 and ce-9 into cells that had a stop protein that prevented apoptosis and basically try and brute it. Unfortunately I only had immunoflorecent and could not study outer structure as well as I wanted to but the deterioration of other cells besides the cancer cell was apparent over a long time and the shape was just bad, even with r-protein. This was very basic as I was in high school at a time and wasn't even intern level at the lab, think lab assistant's assistant, I had all the basic basic stuff. Oh, and for the medication thing, I'm sure none is out at the moment but there many in clinical phase, perfect time to do a write up on it.

Just for those that don't know. The extended essay is a 4000 word essay done on a topic of your choice provided your school can support you in it.

I'm doing the effectiveness of Carbon Neutral programs.

However Key-J, many of my friends are doing topics in Biology, if your really that interested I can find out a few of them and see if they interest you at all.

One of my closest friends (only title I can remember) is doing hers on whether or not we need Males to reproduce males, and how it would affect society and yada yada.

As I said, lemme know

As a note, I would be careful doing stuff on the internet as one of my peers (year above) had his essay disallowed after it was discovered that his essay had appeared on the net (apparently it was him that wrote it, but still) and thus he didn't get his diploma, so be careful

Hey it interested me anyway, even if it did mean its useless, just because she needed sperm samples and the first person she asked was me XD However I wasn't allowed
