U.S Harvard Congress

Post by Key-J »

Ok, this is one of the few times when i get to take advantage of the Internet and International forums :)

Well, I need the Americans amongst us, thy must give me your knowledge of the workings of the U.S Senate. Any information you give me will be O so appreciated! Now, im sure you are probably asking why I need this information. Simple;

I along with 6 other students from my school have been elected to represent our school in the Upcoming Harvard Model Congress – Asia. (Click Me for Details). And I was just informed that my position in the Congress will be the Senate Committee on Judiciary

Now, I was given instructions to read the official page of Judicial information. However, I would also like to hear from you guys, who actually live in America and are effected by the U.S Senate. What are your views on Wiretapping, Identity Cards, Enemy Combatants and such? To be perfectly honest, I'm not even 100% certain what the role of the Judicial Senate is. Maybe you guys know a bit better and could fill me in.

I dono, I guess any information related to this, or the U.S Senate in general would be greatly appreciated. O, and the Congress is in September, so there is no rush or anything.

Thanks in Advance Guys

Like all Senate commitees, the Judicial Commitee Is a part of the Senate not a seperate Senate. There is no Judicial Senate, Ways and Means Senate etc. All the various commitees are made up of sitting Senators.

In theory the commitees deal with specific issues and release recommendations to the Senate as a whole or sometimes just the Senate leadership. The thinking behind this is that nobody can be knowledgable in ALL areas. With this system different Senators specialize their knowledge and share their insights. That's the theory anyway.

As to the 3 specific issues:

Wiretapping: I am not comfortable giving up my rights in the name of the War on Terror. A warrant should have to be issued for a tap.

Enemy Combatants: Since I am not 100% sure what really goes on in Gitno (which is a problem in and of itself) we can't be treating non-citizens worse than they treat our soldiers when caught. I have yet to hear of us beheading anybody with a rusty saber.
However, I have a major problem with denying a citizen his rights just because somebody decides to classify him/her as an enemy combatant. Google Jose Padilla about this.

Identity Cards:
No problem. We already all carry driver's liscence. We already use a Social Security # for identification. A national ID card is no more intrusive in our lives. I believe a national ID card would help cut down on voter fraud and help combat the illegal immigrant issue.

Sorry Key I tried to help.

You might get more help on a forum with a higher age demographic. I imagine this is a young board for what you are looking for.

Asking americans for help with american politics will only lead you to a dead end.

The only thing most of them know is that George Bush is bad, and they should hate him.

I just got back from it. And it was HELLA fun. Haha, who knew politics could be fun, i guess its just cuz there was 273 students doing politics.

I got good stories and i might upload photos, but i tell you. Murphy's law was behind us EVERY step of the way.

Benjamin Franklin.

The 4th Amendment is not an essential liberty?

Oh, well excuse me.

"The Supreme Court held in Katz v. United States (1967), that the monitoring and recording of private conversations constitutes a "search" for Fourth Amendment purposes, and therefore the government must obtain a warrant before domestic wiretapping can be engaged in."

But you continue supporting your NSA's warrantless surveillance program.
