Problem with my Canon PowerShot A300

My camera seems to have a problem when i turn it on. It would show previous pictures that i have taken already but when i try to take a picture the screen is black so i can't see what I'm taking. Does anyone know why?

maybe you still have the cap on

idk.. maybe that you have to put it on camera mode instead of view pics mode?
as in from the little green triangle (thats what it normally is) to the camera
icon?
