Help me with my assignment: Google Streetview.

Post by Priam »

Anyone allready looked at Google streetview?

If not, check it out at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=5th+ave+nyc&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.630055,82.265625&ie=UTF8&ll=40.78782,-73.965282&spn=0.0438,0.080338&z=14&om=1&layer=c&cbll=40.77504,-73.96515&cbp=1,360,0.5,0

It allows you to take a look at the streets of 5 (for now) major american city's. use the arrow key to navigate.

Anyways, i need to do an assignment about this at school. with one major question.

Do you think Google Streetview violates people's privacy? and if answered yes, or no: Why?

Thanks.

One women filed complaints with the police cause her cat is visible behind the window in one of the pictures, is she plain mental, or does she still have some grounds?

Thinking about George Orwell - 1984 here.

Nah, she's on about how this will escalate into something bigger, where people from all around the world will be able to see what's in her closet for example.

Not an invasion of privacy due to it being in a public location. Also you cannot positivly ID anyone due to the extream pixilation at full zoom in. Unless you have a government grade computer face recogniciton program and the people are in AFIS

True, but this doesn't always count. Some photo's are high res- enough, and taken from a close range.

As long as they are not recording audio, california state law (and I think USA law) does not consider it invasion of privacy.

Besides all that, evidently the satellite imagery and photos taken at Google aren't in any kind of "real time", so spying on someone would be awfully difficult, wouldn't ya think? :?
When the great empires of the world are no more. When the names of today's celebrities are forgotten. When our customs are antique and our innovations quaint. There will still be a blue light emanating from a distant satellite and an electronic voice intoning - "Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk!"

It's not spying, it's more of a privacy thing in the matter of people being able to see what you are doing, or even what you posses.

Just to add one more thing: This is just the start. Mind you.
