S.B.S and S.S.S

Have you ever heard of these abreviations before? I'm pretty sure that all of you experience them. It's called

Sick Building Syndrome
or
Sick School Syndrome.

S.B.S Definition wrote:Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a combination of ailments (a syndrome) associated with an individual's place of work (typically, but not always, an office building), though there have also been instances of SBS in residential buildings. A 1984 World Health Organization report into the syndrome suggested up to 30% of new and remodelled buildings worldwide may be linked to symptoms of SBS. Sick building causes are frequently pinned down to flaws in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and are often 'cured' by boosting the overall turn-over rate in fresh air exchange with the outside air. Other causes have been attributed to contaminants produced by out-gassing of some types of building materials, or improper exhaust ventilation of light industrial chemicals used within.

Now, the thing is that my group in school has the missfortune id say to take on Sick School Syndrome in our school. Now weve come up with things about it in our school. However, a part of the work is reserch. This is where you guys come in.

Now, i know many of you go to school, but many of you also work. So this is what i ask you.

1st. Do you know what SBS/SSS is? (Before Reading This Topic)
2nd. Do you think your place of school/work is SBS/SSS Vulnerable or already ongoing?
3rd. If no (to question 2) what has your place of work/school done to combat SSS/SBS?

If you guys have any other general comments or wtvr, that would be great. This is actually a big problem. One which many of us dont know...

as far as i get it, you are asking if the buildings we work in have any
illnesses as in pollution?

just to be sure that i get it. i have had jobs in several places.

Never heard of that expression before, but been aware of how the inside climate and building material can affect you.

2nd. Do you think your place of school/work is SBS/SSS Vulnerable or already ongoing?
My old high school had some serious ventilation problems and usually at the end of the day most of us were tired (more then what is normal

) and some also had to deal with headache. It was never really fixed during my three years there. As soon as it got warm outside in spring, open windows were mandatory. Not fun for those who have allergy...me included >.>

Hm.. not to sure about this one. I know that in the summer my highschool has ventilation problems. Like Alfred's, it is also mandatory to keep our windows open on hotter days. Actually, yea i think our school did have this problem, because during winter (close to the winter holiday time) they sent workers to fix the ventilation system. I'm not sure about my workplace though. We have heat problems there, but i haven't had any problems health wise since i started working there.

Yeah, just like. Because of our work place or school place we get ill.

Is there any place youve worked before, that at the end of the day you just feel unusually crapo?

Or that you know changes your personality?

Nope. Ventilation systems for my highschool work fine as far as I know. But there are other influences to tiredness such as not getting enough sleep, boring teachers, even more boring classes ect. Usually for me it goes on a school day from sleep->tired->less tired->more tired-> sleep.

I didnt know anything about SBS/SSS before I read that article, after the article it was still a bit unclear but when I read the first helpfull reply I think I got it

Well, I'm still in school and I think we have indeed some ventilation problems because the classes smells a bit muff most of the time and we dont even have a normal airco AFAIK...So my school is SSS already ongoing =)
