Unfortunately the only way to get music onto your ipod that I know of is through iTunes.
You *don't* have to recopy all your music to put it into itunes, though. When you tell it to search your computer for music, there's an option that controls whether it copies everything it finds to the itunes folder, or just remembers where the original files are.
If itunes is already installed, go to Preferences -> Advanced and make sure the box is unchecked that says "Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library".
Then you simply find the music on your harddrive, select the files, and drag them into the itunes window.
Connect your iPod and it should show up in your itunes window. Take songs from your itunes library (top option on the left, "Music") and drag it straight onto the ipod (also on the left of the itunes window).
