So I just got hired by Air Canada for a Flight Dispatcher position!

Couldn't be happier at the moment!!! :yay:

This will be my new office:

I am starting June 1st!

We do the flight plans for the pilots. We will figure out all the fuel requirements, the route, and give updated weather for the pilots. In a nutshell

Gratz on achieving your career goal.... I know exactly how that feels... I've achieved mines just over a year now. I too was ecstatic when I landed my dream role...and still to this day feeling proud..

(I plan and design the development of communication infrastructure/facilities to reach new commercial/residential/industrial developments...Fiber optic communication lines, subterranean service path systems, passive/active components/devices placed along roadways/highways/streets/boulevards...)

It's real nice when dreams come true....I gotta ask you though....Weren't you studying/practicing to become a pilot?.. Did you had a career change?...

Well yeah a little bit... I wanted to become a pilot but the 70-80k$ debt kinda put me off, and the years of studying as well. I quite enjoy this, and will probably end up buying a small plane later on in my life. I'll have best of both worlds. I just moved to Toronto now, found myself a nice apartment and everything is falling into place nicely. Starting work tomorrow at 6:30am. Bright and early for a first day!

I'll give you guys updates to see how it's going!!

Hey guys! Sorry been MIA so long... Work has been great starting my first "shadowing" shift tonight, graveyard shift.. Basically just going to sit next to a licensed dispatcher and watch him work and ask him questions.

you mentioned licensed dispatcher, are you not licensed yet? Do you get after training, during training, or do already have it?

Every company has a different license you have to get, so I was licensed before when I was in Calgary, now I have to train for about 2-3 months so that I can pass an exam (not a written exam) but one that a certified Transport Canada person (usually in-house) so another dispatcher does a check with you all day. So you do your normal shift work, but the other dispatcher sits with you and asks you various questions during your shift, and also gives you simulated emergency scenarios to see if you know the procedures. It is an "open book" exam so you are free to ask your colleagues any questions or look at the manuals that are available to you.

Love, the job doesn't say to memorize two 1000 page documents to be able to work the desk. The exam is to prove to the company that you know where to look, in which document to look, and how efficient you can be. There are some procedures in those books that you might not see in an entire year, but you just have to know where to look when it does happen..

Yeah, to be honest that is the best kind of exam. Mainly because it is focused on your day-to-day work.
As you said, who is ever going to need to remember an entire text book once they actually get a job? Nobody. What matters is that you know where to look.

If only more universities would recognize this. Oh well.

NOTE: Of course some subjects require you to remember something by heart. And that's great. But we all know that once we get to actually work a full-time job, Google will be your best friend, and you'll always have a calculator by your side. This, however, is no reason not to learn your stuff

In a sense its a "call center" for pilots. hahaha, when in doubt call dispatch, someone will pickup no matter the time/day.
