No other game like SRO
I'm posting this here since GD is dead.
But I want to know what draws you guys to SRO, what about the game did you like about it?
For me personally I fell in love with the mastery/skill tree as well as the triangular conflict. The art style of the game was pretty nice and I believe that it can still compete with new games if it were in the hands of a good company.
Trying other MMO's out its not the same feeling, Xian was where it was at. The setting, music, and guild conversations are irreplaceable.

The graphics, even though its not all that, other games look so cartoonish when compared. Also that you can kill mobs pretty easily
I tried a few other games, Perfect world, cabal, jade dynasty (?), raekwon (?), just dont have the same feel.

it was my friends, back then I used to go to an internet cafe with friends, everybody playing silkroad in that place, we all tried it out, and it was fun because of the community, then later when I had a pc good enough for silkroad and an internet connection I started playing again but alone, and in salvation as well it was the community that kept me playing, same reason why I can't play it anymore, the awesome community is shattered
Hi
Re: No other game like SRO
The Art-style....The graphics...The skills with their colorful effects...The Ambient lighting in the game environment...The background music....The game community....All these things came together in a very appealing way.....And of course the triangular conflict system....I have never played a game before then that allowed you to openly attack other players and be rewarded for it... SRO was unique to me....It was invitingly different....I loved it....One of the best I've ever played....

xian started it all, but the game didnt have the management. would be nice to see if sro2 gets maintained better but i didnt like changes they made to the game i loved the old method for the triangle system sure it could be improved but locking you into one i just didnt like, since then you never seen the huge trade runs guilds ran back in the day which meant you lost a sense of achivement from a game that had little to offer back other then grind fests and uniques, ultimately the community made the game what it was. i do tell myself if i win the lottery i would buy out joymax and clean up their act.

I'm so much over this game that even the Venus legit era barely gives me nostalgia. It was fun but SRO was a poverty game to start with

Re: No other game like SRO
I never made it past level 50, but I have no idea how I got that far in the first place. This game sucks and everyone knows it.
I think the only thing that was fun was seeing the guys with SOS high level gear just chilling outside of Jangan and thinking "man I'm gonna be like that and be the ultimate thief and rob all traders". Only to find out all traders did 1 star trades on live and there was nothing to thieve.
I think I pulled the plug on SRO when I was farming those monkeys outside of Hotan and I was getting like 0.01% per kill and I did a doubletake to see if it was for real. So I kill a champion monkey and I don't even get 0.01% for it so I was like "fuck this shit" and started playing wow.

Re: No other game like SRO
It was fun back in the day, I use to play it with some guys at school and it was a way for me to socialize with people I never really talked to much. Besides that I was sucked in by the typical MMO traits, there wasn't anything "special" that drew me to the game. At the end of the day it's a poorly developed game, with horrible balancing, terrible graphics and infested with botting issues. But, none the less, for the few years I played it I enjoyed it. I haven't played it in many years and I have no desire to touch the game ever again, but I will always look back on my first MMO with fond memories

Re: No other game like SRO
sro as a game is perfect, ruined by bots (tbh its joymax who made leveling so impossible)..
pvp, skills, graphics, and the sets.. it was amazing and i still cant find a game that is the same, blade and soul looks promising but its yet to be released.

Re: No other game like SRO
Sro is far from perfect. The bots and balance are the two main issues.
The botting problem, although blamed largely on joymax, for obvious reasons, is actually our fault entirely. If people just hadn't been so damn greedy and resisted the urge to cheat to win, the bot problem would be non-existent. But that's human nature for you, I guess.
As for the balancing, its really not hard to do. Hell, we did it on salvation. There was no op class/race. And it was perfect.

i have to agree on the botting tho
but on the balance part i think you are 50 % right ,
sro wasnt balanced that well ( im looking at you lvl 120 warriors)
and chinese being underpowered if you arent using it correctly
but that is about it
there is no such thing as balance since then evry class should have the same dmg and the same defences.
they all have there good and bad things , but that is in evry game like this.

Re: No other game like SRO
I suppose what drawed me to this game in the first place was the graphics. It looked really nice and unique back in the day. I read an article about it in a magazine and there was also a little screenshot of Jangan with people stalling and stuff. So then I tried it out. I remember running out the gates and the whole place was loaded with people, I had no idea what I was supposed to do since I had never played an MMO before (or any game that wasn't browser-based for that matter). I got a few levels before I figured out how to turn the camera, before that I ran into the Chin Tomb area and got killed since the camera was pointed south and I didn't see any mobs coming at me.
Anyways, the graphics and the atmosphere were very nice. The soundtracks are the best I've ever heard in an MMO. The skills looked awesome and very smooth, not flashy like most MMOs do it these days. The mastery system was unique in the MMO scene, it's nice to be able to do what you want, not just choose a class, you could try out different combinations and make any weird build work. There are still only a handful of MMOs that don't have classes. And ofcourse the triangular conflict, that's nothing you'd ever see anywhere else basically, it's a shame they messed that up. Also the items were really nice, mad props to the designer(s), haven't really seen such coolness in terms of equipment in other MMOs.

You can't really blame people for acting on their nature..... If you want to prevent something bad from happening you have to take measures.....For example locking your door before leaving the house...We seriously can't expect that people should be on their best behavior....its ludicrous...
Joymax didn't put much effort into preventing people from doing what most will naturally do if they are given the opportunity and freedom to do it......Joymax ignored the problem for years.....The bot crisis was entirely their fault in my opinion....They left the doors to their house open for all to see.....and that act invited more and more botters....

Re: No other game like SRO
The partying! God damn I liked 8 men euro parties so much. And the trading as well. Going from const to jangan with a 5* was truly epic too. What really destroyed the game imo is the 100 cap and the ridiculously long ride to B4 of the caves, the botting and the abusive item mall. Well, I didnt really mind a few botters here and there, but when ALL areas were taken by 8 men afk parties it was not playable anymore.

This
I have tried so many other MMO's, but none could give me the same feeling as I had when playing SRO
SRO at it's prime: cap 70 & 80
Euro-update and cap 90:
I did enjoy the patch; but Euro was so powerful compared to any chinese build, it just wasn't fun
the trading got changed; mostly good
-> new nicknames & ranking was awesome (no more backstabbing 'hunters' that changed to thief while trading)
good rewards for traders & hunters; it was very enjoyable, fun, intense
40vs40 fights
no other game has given me that yet...
no more mercs
(And cap 90 -> first sun drop for me; was also first Sun glaive lvl 76 on the server
Many jimmies were rustled that night)
small edit: I posted the screenshot of the drop here; insta "omg no yellow boxes -> botter" on this forum >.<
cap 100 = beginning of the end
Re: No other game like SRO
^
omg lol...Mercs..totally forgot about those...They remained until the end of level 70 cap... One of the best ways to attack or defend a trade run...good times....Thanks for bringing back that piece of memory...

Funny you should ask....Tho this story has to do with the game and not SRF..... I presided over a wedding within the game to my immense surprise... I didn't think people would do such things as to get married in a game....I jokingly offered to marry them and to my surprise they said yes....
More globals started being spammed and tons of people showed up at chin's tomb entrance where I stand atop the steps with the couple just below me and a horde of people below them in the court yard....I was laughing the whole time....people kept calling them nerds and weirdos and making some really funny comments....like "Its probably two dudes and the one with the male character doesn't know"
By the time I got to the "I now pronounce you man and wife" part a bunch of thieves started to nuke everyone...including the couple and myself..... It was chaos and laughter all around...I remember laughing so hard I was grabbing my desk for support while looking at my computer screen....One of the best time I've ever had in SRO......I really wish I recorded the whole thing but everything happened sorta fast and on the fly... Spur of the moment wedding...

It was free and a decent time killer. Plus the alchemy system was unique and the changing colors on weapons was awesome.
It was more of a foot in the door for better MMOs like WoW though, so I guess I have it to thank for that.
