Freedom of speech = solitary confinement without trial
Freedom of speech = solitary confinement without trial
So apparently a 19 year old dude from Texas is in prison (in solitary confinement I might add) for making a joke either on LoL or FB (not sure) about committing a mass shooting and hasn't had a trial.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor.
Re: Freedom of speech = solitary confinement without trial
Well, I'm not gonna say the joke was anything good but still, a prison for that? The part I don't get is that he didn't have a trial. Even rapists and murders have a trial, and someone throws out one lame joke and he is considered as a 'threat to national security'. yup, freedom and equality right there...wp USA

Terrorist don't get trials in the good ole USA, at least not before going to prison. You make a terroristic threat you go straight to the slammer. In both the articles it does say that his trial date was set for July 1st but neither of the article have been updated so I'm guessing a sentence has not been reached.

This is just sad, and another reason I connect nothing of my real life on my internet usage.
Arent threats supposed to able to be carried out and said in a serious manner in order to be a threat. I hope he gets out and sues them for **** tons, and if possible the asshole who reported him. Who could look at something like that and think its serious and call authorities -.-. If everyone who threatened someone on the internet could be arrested the internet would be a quiet place.

We've let our government get way out of control, all in the name of security, there probably will not be any grounds for a lawsuit. Thanks to a lot of bullshit laws passed under the last two administrations(Bush/Obama) they are now allowed to detain you for suspicious activities for an undefined amount of time. Look at them boys in git-mo(military has jurisdictions over that though)...

Good, he deserves any amount of time they decide to detain him for. Not only is the joke in bad taste, but it's just unnecessary given the recent acts of terror going on.
I feel like you give up your "right to free speech" when you directly, even as a joke, threaten to incite terror.

I'm trying to remember the name of it. I think it was a little more than a year ago and I remember there being issues with habeas corpus and whatnot.
I love how you guys all like to talk about freedom of speech going out the window like threatening to go on a mass shooting spree is something completely fine to talk about.

False.
A good sarcastic joke takes quite a bit of wit to pull off.

Yes. I believe slapstick to be the lowest form, but stooges pulled it off.

And on the list of things to give a **** about, terrorist shouldn't even be up there... Oh damn just go look for a list of things that you're more likely to be killed by than any forum of terrorism. I'm sure falling tree limbs kill more people... How is it not obvious this is fear mongering, at least that's what we called it back when Bush was in office, now it's completely okay to give up freedom for this stupid shit.. 9/11 could have easily been prevented with the security that was in place, we didn't need to have our assholes checked every time we want to fly... of course this is a little bit of hyperbole, but still.

Except he didn't threaten anyone.
What about when people get mad and say they'll kill someone, or assholes in mmos who threaten you in some way or another, just to name a couple examples. Its beyond the point of should he have or not have said it, of course not, it was cruel and stupid. He's probably a dick, and has a shitty sense of humor, but there's no fathomable reason he should be arrested for it.
Wheres the line? What's ok for you to say in a joking manner or simply not being serious, and what will get you arrested? What about threatening to kick someones ass? Does that make you a terrorist?
I've said i'll destroy the world a couple times here and there, I didn't even say lol or jk. Should I be arrested?
I just don't see how this can be ok especially with a possible 8 year prison sentence, when apparently actual violent crimes can have less than that.
Lets just make sarcasm illegal, then when the idiots get their panties in a twist again lets make name calling arrestable, and after that lets arrest people for looking at each other the wrong way.

The terrorists and mass-murdering assholes have won. The whole idea of practicing terrorism against a group of people is to instill terror in their very core. It seems to me that terror has definitely been ingrained in the minds of these poor imbeciles; enough so that they'll go bat-shit crazy over something a guy said in a joking manner.
I do hope that I don't go to jail someday for making dead baby jokes to my friends while doing rounds in a pediatric unit.

As leaders of the free world this is awesome.... I thought silencing/censoring and jailing people for freedom of expression was something that only happens in places like china...

They should pay this guy fucking millions (because money compensates for everything these days) for Farking up his life. That bitch who reported him is probably an ignorant cunt who only follows mainstream media and also thinks that video games are linked to terrorism. Way to go mainstream media, your scaring tactics have worked.
If you did that and someone called the cops on you, they'd probably get something like "but he didn't do anything to you" but if you said you wanted to kill Obama, you'd go straight to jail.
Looking at what has happened lately, it seems they are not even trying to show that this is a democracy any more, they won't admit or say anything though, they let their actions speak for themselves.

Good, I hope he learns his lesson. He should not make these jokes, of which we all know are not jokes and are only meant to provoke the police or trigger something. I'm glad the government is taking threats like these seriously for our sake. I hope the retard stays in jail even longer. He can laugh his ass off in there.

Obviously they don't... This would just make us even more of a police state. People say things in haste all the time, we don't need to put them in jail for it. We can take a look back in history and see where this leads.

I agree that he should get some form on punishment, maybe pay a fine or something, but it's just absurd that someone gets thrown in jail for something that he said, no questions asked. If he doesn't die in there whats gonna happen when he gets out after, lets say 6 years? He lost years of his life that he could have been using for lets say getting a good education and a job. His life ruined and he remains an outcast, and as many people think he probably agrees that he went in the jail for technically no reason, now that's a pretty good reason to actually blow something up.
