US entertainment wants to fight piracy with rootkits/viruses

Post by poehalcho »

US entertainment industry to Congress: make it legal for us to deploy rootkits, spyware, ransomware and trojans to attack pirates!

The hilariously named "Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property" has finally released its report, an 84-page tome that's pretty bonkers. But amidst all that crazy, there's a bit that stands out as particularly insane: a proposal to legalize the use of malware in order to punish people believed to be copying illegally. The report proposes that software would be loaded on computers that would somehow figure out if you were a pirate, and if you were, it would lock your computer up and take all your files hostage until you call the police and confess your crime.

Yea, i'd like to see that happen.

I imagine anonymous or someone would probably have it all figured out and beat right away.

Fighting piracy is like trying to get slutty pictures of yourself removed from the internet.

If a bill like this passed, I imagine it would cause such a huge shitstorm that somebody would simply try to aim and completely destroy hollywood/music industry. Like... unending DDOS attacks, hacking everything they have, stealing all their cash directly and whatnot. Either that or I imagine people downright knocking at their doors threatening them...

@TheDrop, I really don't think you know enough about libertarians.. I figured you'd have done at least a little research on the things you talk about. Yet again ypu speak ignorantly about libertarians.

We believe the individuals' liberties are the most important. How that translates to us wanting out of control corporations running ppl's lives is beyond me. Just like we don't like big government running ppl's lives. Sorry not every thing is a zero sum game.. You can dislike big government while disliking out of control monopolies as well. Best part, most big bizz is in bed with the government, so the more government you liberals are for, the more big business you're getting......... I'm sorry, but its so obvious you're young and lack a lot of real world experience.. Just like ole mclovin..

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

This would go against Amendment 4 in the Bill of Rights. By doing this, they would illegally search and seize hold of your computer and personal files without warrant. **** this bill.

Additionally, software can be written that will allow only authorized users to open files containing valuable information. If an unauthorized person accesses the information, a range of actions might then occur. For example, the file could be rendered inaccessible and the unauthorized user’s computer could be locked down, with instructions on how to contact law enforcement to get the password needed to unlock the account. Such measures do not violate existing laws on the use of the Internet, yet they serve to blunt attacks and stabilize a cyber incident to provide both time and evidence for law enforcement to become involved.

Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Libertarians tend to portray the gov't as a corrupt system but fail to show that the reason it is corrupt and inefficient is due to big business and corporations. While probably not its main goal, libertarianism helps corporations by demonizing sensible regulations. Theres a reason CEOs are so crazy about endorsing a simple tax code yet at the same time they are the ones filling it with garbage (ex. Tim Cook). I'd write more but idc about writing a whole essay for a forum, theres my thesis
Im sure your yoda-like knowledge about the real world would be very educational, as you can see I do not attend libertarian events but i do visit discussion boards, and the bs spewed there (monopolies are the free market except gov't-run, like sewage systems, collective bargaining should be illegal (irony), house of reps to decide presidential election to weed out the "uninformed", etc) is puke-inducing. Research? Ayn Rand? no thanks.
But keep on, continue demonizing government by the people and put big business, wait my bad, job creators, on the pedestal.
Also criticizing conservatism and libertarianism does not make someone a liberal, lul

No, having liberal beliefs makes someone a liberal. How is big business the thing that corrupts government? You're handing a hand full of narcissistic ppl power over the rest of the people... I don't think it takes any business to turn these ppl corrupt. We're talking about ppl that are allowed to inside trade, give themselves raises, and exempt themselves from laws. Get over this libertarians kick, you don't have a grasp for the ideology, which is clear. You might try to learn something from other means, cause it doesn't seem you are learning anything but false generalizations.

Yup, makes sense

you are against special subsidies for oil companies right? Or do you support them, as Rand Paul put it, as a "reward" for their successful business and job creating skillz?

@Fiction, "how is it big business that corrupts the gov't" . Considering the fact that corporations are now "people" and they can donate unlimited amounts of money to campaigns for political office. Big business can effectively buy elections.

http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/11 ... e-and.html

On topic didn't Sony do something along this line years ago. I remember hearing about a company putting root kits on software to monitor its usage and whom it was used by.

Sorry, I should have explained, my response was more asking, "how is big biz the sole corruptor of government". As in, the government is plenty corrupt by itself, without big business.

I don't mind having a discussion, but with someone that knows what they're talking about. You go on with strawman arguments, that aren't even used in the correct circumstance. For the most part your arguments are put down on ppl that you generalize because you don't know shit, but disagree with how they live. I find you to be annoying. You complain about these "rednecks" being bigots, but you're more bigoted minded. You just seem really hypocritical and seem to not know very much about what's actually going on, other than what msnbc tells you about. To compare me with a neo-con tea party kinda shows your lack of understanding. Perhaps you'll learn more once you've graduated high school. If you're gonna respond, please let it be an explanation on how you're not a bigot.. Or how you might actually know something other than the same old ignorant liberal rhetoric... Yeah, you're better off not discussing with me.

Anyways, why is it fine that the government takes natural rights from us, but when they mess with your Internet freedom, all the sudden the sky is falling? Aren't these the ppl that know better than your "average tea party idiots"?

you view me as a bigot cause I think people that cry about the government taking guns away, when the law clearly says it only extends background checks to gun shows, are stupid? (even though owning guns isn't a natural right, but ok).

You keep telling yourself that you are a libertarian, but you only seem to support the causes that conservatives usually support, which is much of the "libertarians" today. Abortion, prison system, farm/corporate subsidies, take a huge backseat to bitching about taxes and gun control. you assume I'm a liberal/watch msnbc based on me supporting gun control and higher taxes :palm:, then bitch about generalizations. Graduating high school did not seem to help you all that much (or maybe you didnt).
anyways theres no point discussing to a "libertarian" who basically picks and chooses, and why should i bother answering your questions if you don't answer mine.

What do you mean by, 'It depends on the "natural" rights I'm talking about'? So it's fine to take away certain natural rights, but not others? If you're going off of TheDrop's reply, you shouldn't. He doesn't really know what he's talking about, his comment was a very misguided and skewed rebuttal, nobody confused the U.S.'s 2nd amendment with a natural right.

It's a shame that this administration promised a lot of transparency, and I think there might have been a promise about lobbyist, and they folded on all of it within the first half of the first term... As long as you let Congress mingle with Big Business, Hollywood, and the Mainstream Media, our(the people) rights will be eroded.

People absolutely have a natural right to self-defense.
But.. how is it possible to have a "natural" right to own, possess
something... that does not exist in nature? Just wondering
