The jury in the murder trial of an Iowa teenager heard on Wednesday a disturbing 911 call in which the 13-year-old suspect admitted to killing his own mother after a failed attempt to rape her. Crooks, who is now 14, was charged with first-degree murder and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse in the March 24, 2012, slaying of his mother, 37-year-old Gretchen Crooks.

In the 911 recording made on the night of the murder at the family's Osage home, Noah Crooks could be heard telling dispatcher Barb Michael: 'I’m not joking at all. She’s dead. I’m scared. I killed my mom with my .22. I don’t know why I did it.'

I know I'm going to get some flak for this, but there is nothing wrong giving a teenager a gun. It's who you're giving the gun to. There are thousands of kids out there with rifles in rifle competitions for aiming. Do you see them going around mass murdering? Nope.

Here in the Netherlands I believe most people 'borrow' a gun from the
gun range when they want to shoot, and some have their own just for the
competition purposes. I personally think it's a bit naive to think that
the majority of people owning a gun in the United States own that gun to
join in on aiming competitions with strict rules.

My girlfriend let me read something in a magazine, it was about how American
families are proud of the guns and rifles they own. I saw parents with rifles,
of course only the biggest rifles would do, and kids holding handguns they
could barely lift. I know I'm not American and I probably don't know how it
feels, the feeling of safety, about being able to fend against intruders; where
I live, the risk of someone actually barging in with firepower is rather low.

To me it simply seems highly unlikely that the majority of gun owners participates
in aiming competitions. It seems way more likely that they own a gun to either be
able to defend themselves or to 'just own one, because everyone owns one'.

Plus, I think America could do with an age limit for guns. Same as for alcohol
and cigarettes. Guns can be very harmful for ones health and the person wielding
one should be very aware of the risks involved. Guns can in this case still be
sold to or wielded by complete and utter morons, but at least they are more likely
to be aware of the consequences of firing it than a kid.

Well, technically there are laws in place that place minimum age requirements when buying guns "legally" from dealers and individuals.

I'm not too knowledgeable on that law and too lazy to look it up again, but iirc it's something like 18y/o minimum age for shotguns/rifles, and 21y/o for a handgun from dealers. Ofc, there's varying circumstances that change the age, blah blah.
