Outdoor jobs/education

Post by woutR »

Hey guys,

Two years ago I posted a thread here when I was looking for a great gap-year experience. Cin told me about Norway and his gap year there and not 2 months later I was in Norway to check it out. I went to the same school Cin went to and I went on to have one of the best years of my life following a program called 'Outdoor Life'.

After that I started studying International Relations but I have now realized my heart lies with the outdoors and am gonna try to pursue a career in that field. This is where I need your help. I have great experiences with asking you guys for help (as well as some bad ones :P ) and I am wondering if there's anyone here that has good knowledge of the outdoor industry that could point me in the right direction.

I am looking for a job in the outdoors (in either Europe or North America) or an education that will get me closer to achieving my new found dream of becoming an instructor at an organization like Outward Bound. (I have of course already mailed them)
As a struggling teen myself I am very inspired by this company and I am very serious about this. I know that by saying this I am probably asking for it, but I'd appreciate it if we not derail this thread with funny images of Bear Grylls drinking piss and stuff.

As my past experiences with Cin have shown I take all suggestions seriously and am looking forward to reading your suggestions :)

Spoiler!

I know that in Norway there are studies related to friluftsliv
and I know that there are also possibilities for one to afterwards
get a job at a folk highschool or at the national parks. I can
ask around for some more detailed info but I would be asking my
friends from Norway about it, which I'm sure you've already done
as well ;]

If it's North America you're aiming at, then I can mail an old
friend of mine for you, who I actually met in Norway, who has
always had jobs in the outdoor and is currently working for
Howling Dog Tours.

If you'd like I can send him an email and see what he can tell
me about it.

The friluftsliv study which is 'attached' to a job at a national park or folk high school is unknown to me, and I thought I had checked out every university and 'hogskole' there is. It seems really good, as a job at a national park or folk high school would be amazing. I'd appreciate it very much if you could look into that!

The Howling Dog Tours also look amazing. I have no experience with dog mushing, but the guy you know there probably knows a lot about outdoor education and could be very helpful. I don't mean to make you do all my work, so I'd gladly send him an email myself if you can PM me his info.

Thanks Cin! You never disappoint

I've sent him an email with the global question
for information on studies/jobs related to outdoor
living, and asked him if it is ok to share his email
adress. Mind you, I hadn't spoken to him in like 5
years or so, so I'm not sure how long he will take
to reply ;]

I will ask some of my Norwegian contacts on what
the possibilities there are too :]
