New Scientific Discovery - Faster than light

Post by /Pi »

I just got some mad crazy goosebumps from finding out about it (from reddit, no less). If confirmed this will be one of the greatest discoveries by humanity. It'll certainly bring sweeping changes to physics.

Gah...
My astronomy 101 teacher is asking us to give a reasoning why this is plausible or implausible...
Can anyone tell me anything about this ;___;

The neutrino took a cosmic shortcut through another dimension.

Another dimensions are not proven. Still a "theory"

Proofs are only used in mathematics. :)

What are you referring to exactly? As in does time move in a straight line? Then Yes. As far as we can prove anyways. Scientists around the world have even started stating as such and say that Time Travel is theoretically impossible and that if it were possible, it would have happened already. My own personal view on this is, it's possible. Why? Because there are so many things nowadays that a few decades ago were considered impossible, but have been proven to be true. And it would be badass lol

as cool as this is its way too early to properly discuss it, the possibility its an error or not an accurate reading from the equiptment is stil the likely culprit, if on the other hand they find it to be true physics as we know it is wrong and that is very interesting what will replace it who knows too early to think, also reading some of the comments above me this is already been derailed a little bit

Go HERE if you want to read 57 pages of physicist and mathematicians discussing this. You better brush up on your physics before entering... I was like, wut?

No one has found any evidence that it's false, but more and more people are saying there must be a mathematical flaw somewhere. Question is, where is it(if it exists).
Hundreds of Experts and Top Men(lol, yes I needed a laugh) have not found any errors in the last week. I hope it's true, but if not.. meh

Isn't there a theory say that if you can go faster than light, then you can travel to the past? :?

i would, if i could go back to when civilisation is just starting to emerge id set things in play for a better more united world, no singling out those who are different and NO RELIGION, religion can be in some way associated with everything bad thats ever happened on this planet even if its a loose affliation. nazi's where very christian, 11/9 (im british nothing happened on 9/11 here) was extreamists, just think of something even the simple reality of people dying of things we could cure if allowed to do certain things that are deemed against gods will or mormons who dont want blood to be taken, so yeh id go the past, id also remove currency like in star trek as in theory it could work then again communism in theory works what kills it is money and power but if you go the past you can put all this in motion not to mention what you know of modern tech even the stupid people know enough about science and tech to put people in the distant past a few years ahead of what they should be naturally, im not a genius but i know how a engine works, i know how to make simple circuits and how to generate electic etc anyways i digress going the past is the best thing you can do but depending how time works (which non of us really do) theres no garentee you will exist for long after making these changes unless time splinters into a different timeline then your ok and so will our reality

You don't need to go back in time for all this to happen. It will eventually happen. History teaches us. I would stop you from going back into time trying to impose a forceful kinda peace. I'd rather the world realize this peace through it's struggles.

people are retarded and fickle, they will believe what the person above them tells them (not always most of the time, even people who say they dont like our goverment belives someone else above them) its not forcefull peace its teaching the world early on like teaching a child if you raise it properly it will turn out good or atleast stands a better chance of been good

Nope. Evil, selfishness, greed exist all the time. It doesn't matter how soon you teach a human species, it will turn all the same.

Isn't there stories about God left testaments or whatever teachings for human to be good? After all how many people would follow these rules?

religion is a hidden evil of the world, without it and currency (be it money or resources) people would work better together if humanity was taught to work to better the whole rather then the individual and stop things like religion and wealth coming into play im fairly sure things would be better no one would be rich or poor, the core drive would be soo different from today. i work for money not to make sure that people can survive by distributing food and water see what i mean 2 ways of looking at things

um well no
if you travel fast enough and far enough away from earth and happen to look back with a extremely high powered telescope you could theoretically see dinosaurs
however were talking about getting millions of light years away in a much shorter amount of time
but yes it would be perfectly true that you could SEE the past however you could never visit it
and about this finding it is still in a very early stage however i do believe it to be possible to travel faster than light we just need to find a way and i do believe that there are particles that do not obey the common laws of physics
