[Help] Buying a Computer.

Now, I need help deciding a laptop. Suggest me good laptops you know. I need a great one because I do plan on playing games on it (highest graphics for the first time in my life hopefully, not having to turn of all effects like I have been doing my whole life

moving out of the house into dorms most probably out of this city so a desktop will just not do with all the moving.

Just don't get an alienware, or any gaming laptop for that matter. Company's think because they label something a gaming laptop and make it look cool they can double the price, and seriously, I have compared alien wares with exact copy's custom built and the alienware was 2X the price! Asus and HP are priced well and can be quite powerful if you get the right one.

Desktops = Definitely build you're own, it's so easy these days you would be stupid not to do it and save money per part rather than pay more from a big manufacturer.

I would disagree to be honest. Only because the amount of effort it takes to build you're own laptop without screwing something up is much higher then desktops. I bought an Alienware Mx11 for myself a while back going in with the same view as andycooly, but I was greatly surprised that it was the best grand I ever spent on a laptop, especially when comparing with my friends who have similar spec'd laptops that cost more from HP/Dell/Toshiba. Laptops are always a touchy subject, but in depth research into what you're actually getting for the price and comparing it with competitors is always the best way to go around it.

Get a netbook or budget laptop for 300-400 and a serious gaming desktop for 800-1000.

If your dad doesn't want to get you both then get the desktop. With your tuition money you can easily squeeze the 300-400 when you go pay your dues.

Well obviously the best one here is the Core i7 version, but competely depends on what you're budget is and how much each of those listed costs. Also, is there no better description of what exactly is the graphics card? 1GB DDR5 VGA isn't exactly specific.

Neither. Build your own. It's reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally easy.

If you buy a pre-built PC, sometimes the prices are jacked up a bit. Since they built it for you and all that blah blah.

However, if you can find a place near you, that does PC tune ups or wtvr, they will most likely do PC builds as well, and you just need order all the parts separately online, and if you don't feel comfortable building it yourself, just go to them with the parts, and ask for them to build it for you.

It should take them no more than an hour or 2, and depending on where you buy the computer parts from, the money you will save + the price of them building it for you will be cheaper than what you might get the same computer for pre-built.

Eg,

I'm currently building a tower, and im only getting a New CPU, Memory and GFX and at the place i sent my computer to get fixed, they wanted to sell me the parts for 500, i searched the same parts online at NewEgg, NCIX & TigerDirect. Got them for about 340

building your own pc is suprisingly easy and im not just saying that... if you have ever looked inside a pc before and you can identify parts then its pretty much simples!

i could help you but... it depends where you live (i use a uk website... im in the uk lol)
it depends on your budget (around £400 will get u a decent PC)
it also depends on what you want to use it for... if you need a laptop for portability then you cant buy a desktop lol.

if you are going for a laptop i would recommend getting a laptop that has no operating system on it, because if you buy it from a brand you are likely to get a LOT OF CRAP on your machine that you wont likely need or use.
oh and dont attempt to build your own laptop, its cheaper to buy them whole usually...

Never built a PC on my own but hopefully I'll be able to find someone to help me out.

I've been checking out these Asus laptops and they seem great.

It's not hard. You put the pieces together considering they only have one place to go. Intel chips are padded now(no pins) so you can't really go wrong unless you're a complete moron and start scraping the bottom or something. The only thing you probably would have no idea is hardware. Ask around and people are glad to help. You can build a great gaming PC for $500. Not able to max every game, but still a great budget one. Put in $200~$300 more and you are pretty much able to max everything out now.

Well I never played LoL, but I would assume it would unless you have a really bad CPU or not enough power to turn on i guess

You can get the 460 for $100 on sale. Look for better prices at different sites.
