some of the more elaborately designed cars have systems to use the clutch in various ways (to increase torque or stability and smoothness of the ride) most commonly seen is a button pressed when the gas pedal is on the floor which switches down a gear to allow increased torque when over taking.

o btw, manual cars have more control over the engine, thats why most motor sports use the gear stick, just generally more control
