Only reason i see holding him back is energy cost on a mass level. It's prob not that much on his small machine used for demonstration, but what about mass production level. Will the energy return from plastic->oil be greater than the energy to run the machine, ie: melting massive amounts of plastic as well as the purification steps to get gasoline.

Not to mention it would be easy to use geothermal/solar/nuclear
