Getting a cat
Hey guys, so finally, after much pestering and being down right annoying, my parents relented and WE'RE GETTING A CAT ASKDLGJA;SLKDJFAKSLDFJAS;DLKFJAS;LFKDJA;SLKDFJS;LKDGJS;LFKJAS;LKDFJS;LKADFJ
So yea, anyways. I'm wondering, since we're gonna be a first time owner of a *large* pet (largest being two hamsters 10 years ago), should we get a kitten or go to the animal shelter a look at ones that are already potty trained?
How about caring for them? I know the usual stuff, like during the first 2 weeks or so leave the cat alone, or don't force anything on it. There's that trial time for hamsters too.
Also, we live in a 3 story townhouse, will that be a problem for cats? Don't really know if they can naturally climb stairs or not.
And where should I put the litter box? Third floor where we keep the washer and dryer?
If you guys have anymore tips, please tell me =]
thx

Re: Getting a cat
Cats are only good for online pictures / lolcats.
In the real world dogs are much better to have.

Cats only like you when you have food. But anyways, you I would go with one that is already potty trained cuz it sucks to potty train any animal.

Re: Getting a cat
Very nice, I'd probably put it near the washer and dryer.
My family's probably getting a cat soon, I just hope it doesn't shed hair.

Re: Getting a cat
my parents have had several cats.
i suggest you start off with a kitten. it might give some trouble
because it won't know what a litter box is, but it will learn that
quickly enough. the good thing about a kitten is that it will quickly
get used to your company, and to company in general. if you get a
kitten it's easier for the kitten to feel at home than when you bring
in an already aged cat. at least, that's what we experienced. older
cats can be just as adorable as young kittens (we've been to some
animal shelters in the past too), but in general they seem to take
more time to get used to their new "home".
oh, and cats can climb anything, stairs are no problem

Re: Getting a cat
We have always had Cats and Dogs since I was little. Potting training a cat isn't that difficult. Sometimes you don't even need to train em cause they are drawn to some brands of litter and then instinctively use it. I never trained my Cat and she would use the litter pan if she was in the house alone and couldn't get outside.

Re: Getting a cat
To make a cat potty trained, the first thing to do is put him in the cat's box and let him be there without anyone watching. He'll feel comfortable there and that's where he will do his thing.

Re: Getting a cat
Go for a kitten (preferably from a loving home, meaning: people who like cats & snuggle the kittens & give them love while they are still young.)
If u have a big yard: take 2 cats, preferably siblings; that way they won't wonder off far from home & they will always have someone to play with.
After u get the kitten, it's important to keep them inside for at least 1 month, so they know where their home is.
And get ready to clean up some mess while training them xD
When u catch it pooping/peeing; pick up the cat & run towards the litterbox.
Pressing his nose in the mess he made on the floor/couch/w.e didn't really help for my cat.
After a month u can take the cat outside with a leash. Catharnas, x meters of rope & a big pole in the middle of the garden, that way the can explore their 'territory'. Make sure they can't climb any fences yet (they might hang themselves with the rope/harnas)
Get them vacinated/chipped & after a few months, nudered/spaded (or what it's called in english)
<get their reproductive organs 'fixed'>
Best to keep it inside for a few days.
The cat will get more lazy/calm after this.
Enjoy ur purring cat.
My cat comes in around 7am & eats/sleeps till it's 10pm; then i put him outside for the night.
He likes to sit on my lap, lay on my desk while working at the computer, sleeping on my bed/couch.
FYI, cats can go missing for a few days when it's mating season. Mine was gone for 4 days last time.

And by the way, don't get a female cat, when they're in mating season they tend to moan all day long. Atleast mine does -_-

Re: Getting a cat
Hey thanks guys.
We're still not sure if we want to adopt or buy from a pet store. I heard if some cats don't get adopted for long, they'll get put down.
IS THAT TROOF?
Anyways, my dream cat is a Maine Coon, they're kinda hard to come by where I live though.

Re: Getting a cat
We use to have a cat that would climb extension ladders up to like 20 feet then it would jump down :S I guess we weren't entertaining enough for it. But really the only a kitten might have trouble with is going up and down the steps because they are too big for it, depending on his size.Once he learns he will have no trouble at all
I die every Monday at 7am and reborn Friday at 4pm

Re: Getting a cat
btw, whatever you do, if you put the litterbox somewhere, make sure it's not by metal. our water heater was 6 feet away in the basement and it's rusted due to the litterboxes. That was 6 years of it being there. Still a pain to replace.
