In reality there are two fundamental flaws to your thoughts, Squirt. First of all, you think your life is defined by your job. Second of all, you are confining yourself to either living life by "option a" or "option b". Lets tackle these 1 by 1, shall we?

First of all, life =/= work. Simple. If you have the best job in the world, you won't be happy if you go home and have absolutely nothing to look forward to. On the flip side, I know many people who have shit jobs but enjoy their lives, because when they get home they have a beautiful wife and kids waiting for them. Thoughts of them get them through anything, no matter how bad.

The real point I want to make here, though, is why do you have such indecision about your job? You won't be stuck to one job, or even one career, your'e entire life. Find something you enjoy, study it and get a job from it. If you do that, you'll be doing something you enjoy. Isn't that all that matters? For example, I love fixing computers, creating networks, diagnosing software faults etc. So I'm doing a Diploma in Systems Administration (6 months off completion). If I get a job working in a computer repair shop or even as a Systems Administrator (dream job) I'd be happy. I enjoy computers, I enjoy learning more and challenging myself with them, I'll enjoy the work. Simple as that.

Now lets say I'm not earning much money in my chosen job. Who's stopping me from saving money and travelling? Saving money is easy, it's all about stopping yourself from buying useless shit. Instead of buying $100 Nike shoes, buy $20 Dunlop volleys. Instead of shopping at Jeans West, go to jay jays. Simple little things save a lot of money. Saved money = travel bills paid for. It's really not that hard, trust me. When you truly put your mind to it, saving is easy.

Second of all, why can't you both travel and work? Work for say a year, save $15 grand or so and go backpacking for 3 months. I know a lot of people that are doing that. Your about 17-18, right? Get a part time job, save for a few years and when you turn 21 go on a backing holiday. Or, better yet, work over seas! One of my friends is working casually in Canada and travelling the country at the same time. He's my age, 20. Life isn't as constricting as you may believe it to be, money doesn't dictate happiness.

For the last 2 and a 1/2 years, I've worked in a Sawmill. Generic, hard labour. It isn't easy work, the days are long and some days I'm dead afterwards. But frankly, I love it. The people are really nice, I like the exercise and they give me whatever days I need off each week to finish my Diploma. Was it easy? No, I hard to work hard to get where I am today. But it was rewarding and I'm happy where I am. I have a few close friends, I have a loving family and I have hope that one day I might even find a nice girlfriend to spend my life with. And you know what? That's enough for me. I live a happy life, par the odd sad day here and there. Bah, I've said enough as it is.

Work hard, enjoy your time off and work in an industry that interest you. My 2 cents.

A job is a job,you'll grow tired of it no matter what. Everyone gets bored of repeating an action over and over. So might aswell have a good paying job.

Only exception to this might be Football & Hockey.

P.s for those who are interested in Making money and being able to travel, do some research into your country's diplomatic sector. I bet you would be surprised to find that the Job Qualifications are very obtainable.

How many people do you guys personally know who wake up every morning and do something they love, while also making good money?

One of my cousins is a broker and he loves it. Another is a Police Detective and he likes his job and makes pretty good money. Another owns his own construction company that builds gated communities. I even have a cousin who is in the NBA but i've never met him and he's pretty distant and not famous enough for me to remember. The biolab that i interned at was full of scientist and researchers who loved their work and all made pretty good money.

Good money is a relative thing at the end of the day. My mom was a teacher and she loved it and she made enough to keep us in a nice house with plenty of food and clothing. We didn't get an xbox every Christmas but i don't think we needed stuff like that to be happy. You can do what you love and live a comfortable life if you don't want thing like a yacht and a mansion and a shower made of platinum.

I know me, and prok, we both like what we do and make decent cash. Not rich, but enough to have my own house, 2nd lot, RV, GF and plenty of toys.

It is a lot of money, I know, but I'm going to assume Squirt is like me and lives at home. I study part time, work part time and earn $550 a week. I earn about $25,000 a year after tax, own my own car and live at home. If I really put in the effort to save, I can save around $400 a week. If I did this seriously for a year, I'd save up around $15,000 with no problems. I'm lucky, though, as I live at home. But I'm sure Squirt is the same as me and if he found himself a fulltime job to work in, even for a year, he could save it up without an issue.
