GAMING: Desktop vs notebook! Help wanted!

Post by Macsnow »

I'm about to buy a gaming computer (nothing WAY too hardcore, yet something that can run games without too much of a hussle). I'm stuck between two choices, one is a desktop and the other is a notebook. So, I'll note down the specs and would appreciate some feedback on which I should get, how much of a difference there will be between them both, which would you take, etc.

Notebook: ASUS G60jx

~CPU: Intel core i7 Processor 720QM 1.6 GHz, with to /2.8GHz (I personally don't understand the with to part, please explain?).
~RAM: 6GB DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM, 2xSODIMM Socket.
~Hard Drive: 500GB, dual HDD support.
~Optic: 5.25", 12.7mm DVD super multi.
~Screen: 16" HD (1366x768) LED blacklit, glare type.
~GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M with 1GB DDR5 VRAM CUDA
~Webcam: 2.0 Mega Pixel webcam.
~Audio: Altec Lansing speakers. EAX Advanced HD 4.0.
~Batery: 9 cells 7200 mAh
~Card Reader: 8 in 1 card reader, SD, MMC, MS, MS-Pro, XD, Smart Media, MS-Duo.
~Bluetooth: Built-in v2.1.
~LAN: Intel WiFi Link 1000. Integrated 802.11a/b/g/n.
~Fireware: 1xIEEE 1394 port.
~TV-Out: 1xVGA port/mini D-sub 15-pin for external monitor. 1xHDMI.
~Other Ports: 4xUSB 2.0, 1xE-SATA, etc.
~Keyboard: 19mm full size 88 key with MS Windows function keys, numeric keyboard.
~Meassures: 37.5 x 26.5 x 3.43-4.06 cm (WxDxH).
~Weight: 3.30kg.

Desktop:

~CPU: Intel core i7 Processor 860 2.8GHz
~Motherboard: ASUS P7p55d LE.
~RAM: 6GB DDR3 1333MHz.
~Hard Drive: 1TB.
~Monitor: 22" HD screen.
~GPU: ATI HD5850 or ATI 4890 (think I'd go for the first).
~Case: Thermaltake Element G.

Both would be around the same price for me. Pick one, dont give me alternate builds please. I'm now leaning towards the Notebook, since movility is a great future... only concern with it is "Can it PLAY games as nice as other gaming computers?" I don't mind if I don't get the highest fps possible, as long as it doesn't "lag" with games such as CRYSIS, I won't mind at all.

Thanks to anyone who reads/replies to my topic. And sorry for the long read! (Felt like a long type xD) :P

My response into an analogy of levels of orgasm...

Laptop=boner

Desktop=jizz

Mkk?

Edit: The "with to" means that it is overclockable to 2.8 ghz. Nice, but the desktop is way better aka it wont get hot in your hands. Believe me, I know.

As an almost general rule of thumb a desktop is better than a laptop if they have the same price.

Nice analogy, lol.
I know the Desktop is better, of course it will be if you follow common sense. The huge pro of the notebook is movility, I can take it along with me everywhere I go, and that is why I'm leaning to getting this over the desktop. And also because I could go a year or two before I assemble a better desktop (now I don't have the money for a top of the line one).

My only doubt is will this notebook run HEAVY games such as crysis well enough for it to be enjoyable? :)

If you buy a new laptop or pc just for gaming get a desktop, alot better with bigger screen and better keyboard (unless you use an external one on your laptop ofc) and overall it's probably stronger?

Laptops are not built for gaming. Alienware laptops aren't even that efficient for their price. A desktop is always preferred above laptop for gaming unless you are as stated many times, traveling.

Exactly what I'll be doing. I got a decent gaming Laptop atm, love that I can bring it to my friends house,or just chill in my bed with it.Dosn't matter if a Desktop is "better" for gaming,if you can play games with your Laptop then you'r all good.

Just like you, in 1-2 year I'll just build myself my own Desktop :D

I'd say go for the laptop, I got one with worse specs than yours, and the mobility is really really helpful. I can run most games with pretty good fps, as long as I don't run two at once ;)
Bought mine a year ago, and i'm still happy with it :)

Desktop if you are only behind your pc at home.

If you will be going to school with your laptop(like me) or other places, then thats prolly the best choice. I go to school with my laptop, do my thing. When i get home, i just plug in my screen, keyboard, mouse, headset.

Before Jumping Into Conclusions. First Define yourself?

are you active or a home person?
do you have a great social life. Define?
what is your status of security? Home, school, etc.
are you a hardcore user/gamer, define how many hours you play?

some questions may lead the community into a clear conclusion to your problem.

about Intel vs AMD thing... i think AMD is busy in the GPU rather than CPU... as i have heard gossips the new family 6000HD series is about to be released... possibly nailing the last nail into the coffin in the GPU war :D
Just an opinion :D

I know for price/performance, AMD is better. But I still like Intel better. And about GPU's, I prefer ATI over NVIDIA, but whatever both are good.

XMoshe wrote:If you buy a new laptop or pc just for gaming get a desktop, alot better with bigger screen and better keyboard (unless you use an external one on your laptop ofc) and overall it's probably stronger?

I know desktop is stronger & cheaper, yet I dont enjoy sitting at home the whole day... notebook would let me move around a bit more.

Yes. I totally made this thread so you can go and tell me where I'm making mistakes. Thanks so much.

That's what is most motivating to me... being able to take it where ever I want to. So many advantages that come with being able to transport it anywhere you please. :D

Trying to make me out into some computer geek o some shit? No thanks, my girlfriend doesn't really give a crap about what kind of computer I have.

That's part of what I'm asking, will I be able to play most games out there decently? Thanks :)

Im active, spend most of the day out, come home at around 8pm... think being able to take my PC with me would be great! Just wonder what if I can't run every game out there with decent (playabl) FPS...

Great social life? Dont know what you call great, but yeah Im content with my social circles... 8)

Security? No body guards... yet.

Hardcore? No, definetly not. I'd play a max of 3hrs a day.

Im pretty certain I'll get a notebook, but maybe try to aim for a better, more powerfull one, don't want to have one which will be outdated in less then a couple years :P

What do you do when you're out? Cuz if you're in the park or on the street skating or playing soccer or what ever then it would be useless taking your pc :/

Only way I would see it usefull if you can/have to take it to school. Or you sit at friends alot playing then perhaps it would be nice too.

:D I can't really generalize what I do when I'm out lol... but yeah, say 40% to 60% of the things I do when I'm not home would enable me to use it. And yes, I can either use the computers that my school gives me, or take a note/netbook and plug it in. So it would be usefull in that manner.

Thing that is really troubling me now is if this laptop will support and run them games on a playable manner, since I'm pretty put on getting a laptop :P
