Good careers?

Post by Ownage »

Well I have been getting worried about college lately, and I was wondering what do you think is a nice career? Now I am going to be honest I am going to the career that pays. I am not saying I want a career I will hate for the rest of my life, if there is a career that pays 10-20k less per year then the other, but I like it more I would go for that. I was thinking about medical but 12 years is a bit too much, especially due to the fact that you would be in a lot of student loan debt, and you have to be extremely careful or you could cost someone their life, and be sued/jailed. So just wondering if you could help me out.

P.S. I am not dumb, I am pretty smart (not trying to brag) so I want to take something challenging and want a job paying atleast 100k+ after about 5-10 years of working there, I am not expecting a job to start paying me 100 grand, I know it takes a few years and some promotions to get there.

Ownage. **** the money. Pick a job you have an interest in doing or really enjoy. What are your hobbies now? What do you like to do in your free time? Look for jobs that include those kinds of things and you will find the money. Anyone who is good at what they do can make a lot of money doing it, so pick something you will be motivated to do well in.

After like 4k euro p/month I'd already be more than satisfied. So I'd pick something I like, and then aim for that salary.

What Smi!ezZ said. What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing? Not only will doing something you enjoy keep you from being miserable your entire life, it will also help you get through school if you are actually interested in your degree. I'm sure you could find a decent paying career that involves things you enjoy doing.

I like everything about computers, programming, hardware, networking, etc... I'm a computer science major. I'm really into my degree and actually look forward to going to class. Pay should be decent when I get out and increase as I gain experience.

Interest in subject should be 50% of the reason why you pick the major.
Pay rate in subject should be 50% of the reason why you pick the major.

Are you from America? Don't worry about debt from medical school here. Med school graduates make so much money right out of school, its insane. Even more so once you specialize. Medical doctor type jobs probably hover around $200,000. Why do you think everyone else is angry about rising healthcare costs? Inflated doctor pay rate is one reason.

Healthcare, science, technology, engineering, business, education are industries that are generally the fields that grow at a stable rate.

Anything that is related to sustainability. In the future sustainable practices is going to be extremely popular, and there will be money to be made. You can apply sustainability to so many different things, so you can almost incorporate what ever your interests are into that particular mindset. Why not help the world and do something you love? At least it is something to look into :)

I know what you mean when you say don't look at the money. I am not entirely looking at it, but the thing is I want to work hard and get a job that pays good. I don't know why but my taste in things has gone crazy and I always want expensive things, but I am also going to be looking at how much I am interested in it. I won't do something that I absolutely hate, but I am open. I ask for good careers because I have an interest in most high paying careers like : Computers, Medical (there is just a feeling of accomplishment knowing your helping people), and pilot, some engineering and psychiatrist. I would become a pilot but pilots are having harder time finding jobs.

Also Jstar I have been looking into medical but I hear its not worth it because general family doctors, what I want to be, don't make much after malpractice insurance, and its extremely risky, with hell of long hours, not too worried about the hours, but I am worried if I make one wrong move I will end up in jail, or sued. I also hear that the healthcare will cut down on doctors pay even more.

I heard thats extremely hard to get into. Here in Canada, apparently the cutoff rate for that program at Waterloo is 96%; so only like 30~ students across Canada get into it...at Waterloo.

Personally, I'm going into Commerce/Accounting then eventually become a CA. Fresh out of university starting salary for that is 30-40k (CDN) I think. Whatever you do, don't go to university for some sort of bachelor's of arts course just cause you can (like most people do). Take another year in high school to explore different areas of education if you want.

And of course, with years of experience and skill, you can easily make 100K+ yearly salary with accounting.

This is what my dad does, he has his own little place and he is the only person that works there its a good job he makes $150k/yr, but I just can't get into it, its so boring! You get so many customers during winter time and then its rather empty for the rest.

no, doctors even family doctors make a boatload of money. I don't know where you get your information. Healthcare related jobs are some of the highest paying jobs. And remember that there are all kinds of doctors between family doctor and surgeon. And the chances of ending up in jail are low unless you do something that is high risk, like a surgeon or anesthetist.

And most people go to medical school for the money, not for philanthropism. The doctors that really cared to make it better for others would either be arranging affordable healthcare for local low income people or volunteering in africa, mexico, etc.

It's not boring, it's fun. And if you only get people around in the winter, you're doing it wrong.

I <3 my future job.

Do something you're interested in and actually have a good chance of finding a job with later on. I for myself study Marketing, because I'm interested in everything around it and it's a great graduation to get work.
