Re: Guitar
I don't play a guitar, but all I can say is practice, watch others playing, practice some more, make friends with people who have similar interests or coerce your friends to pick up guitar so you can practice together. There are quite a few sites out there dedicated to this subject and you can get free tabs and stuff from them too. Have fun.

They're just sitting in my room...waiting. >_>

Re: Guitar
I have a guitar with no strings. Fun, eh? The closest store I can buy 'em is 30km away, and I just can't be arsed going there. >_>
What I always wanted to learn to play, however, is a saxophone!

I've got a violin sitting right behind me. but I can't be assed to learn it D:
But I'd probably prefer to learn something else =/. violins tend to sound bad solo. maybe the harmonica?

Scales, scales, scales. Learn them, practice them, live them.

Re: Guitar
what is your current skill level, i suggest you find some good tabs
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ is a really good place, if you dont know what to play just look on the top 100 list
guitar pro 5 is a great software for learning and tabbing you can speed up slow down etc
guitar rig 4 is a guitar effects software, to use it you need a 1/4in to 1/8in adapter but thats like 4 dollars, it will bring out sounds from your guitar that you never knew existed, it blew my mind when i first used it
those are all costly softwares though

Re: Guitar
God no not the violin. My sister had a violin for like 3 years, and urgh, those were 3 years of hell.
When you start playing a violin it sounds like a dying cat, and it will take a long time before that goes away.
Just listen to this:
Now imagine this, and multiply the screeching sound by like 10, and then you have my sister playing the violin. Every weekend, every 'special occasion' (/wrists at the end of Christmas seriously) and no one was allowed to tell her it was so bad that you just wanted to stick a fork in your head and get it over with.
I like (well used to like
) my sister, don't get me wrong. But that woman can not play music. Damn bitch had to outdo my flute skills as well by taking an extra year of lessons (I tried to save what was left of my hearing after 1 year). Then I had to hear I was a quitter for the next year every time my sister was going for flute practice.
Funny how some thread about a guitar goes over into violins and evokes my buried rage for my sister when it comes to music.

Re: Guitar
like draq said, scales are important. They are super boring but when is becoming skilled ever easy?
I have guitar pro 5 and it is pretty expensive but its very good for practicing with tabs and has a lot of tools to help you.
consistent practice is going to make you good regardless of what kind of things you do. any beginners should take at least a few months of practice from a guitar teacher for right form, etc and other important basics. Besides that, guitar is great since you can practice on your own time and don't need to spend $$$ for years and years of lessons to get good.

I took piano lessons for 6 months in HS. It's alright... kinda fun at first but you grow tired of it easily.

I learned how to play it, it's a very fun instrument, but it just wasn't for me.

Re: Guitar
I have a guitar. Learn your notes(A, C, G, Em, etc.) by looking at a chart of all these notes. Repeat it 3-4 times. Then look up songs. Hope I helped.

Re: Guitar
chords are important so i suggest playing the rhythm guitar of the songs, after you learn plenty of chords and powerchords you will see the patterns in the lead guitars

Re: Guitar
I just started playing guitar in september, my only problem is practicing, I always get lazy. So far I can play Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix, except for the solo's. Been checking out vids on youtube also, trying to get more into it.
