4870x2, 5000-series or nvidia equivalent?

Post by cin »

in february i bought a pc, put in a 4870x2 and it broke
after a month. i'll shorten the story, but with a bankruptcy
of the company i bought it from and lots of wasted time by
having to mail the curator and the distributors, i got my
card back with no repairs and no warranty because they told
me i broke the card myself lol. i didn't but i dont want to
wait another 3 or 4 months to send the card back in, let em
look at it again and risking the same outcome.

now i'm getting a new card. i'm in doubt now because directx
11 is out now and idk how the "older" 4870x2 copes with that
because i'm not a computer expert. i've looked up some of the
reviews and it sounds like the 5000 series are only stronger
if you put 2 in crossfire.

when i was looking for a card for my pc i focused mainly on
ati and i dont know what the proper nvidia equivalents are.
on sites i see gtx250 or something, and quadrofx being in
the same price range. any suggestions?

Well I can't help you much, but i'll do my daily input, ofcourse me being so dumfounded, why wouldn't you sick with directx 10 for now? just chill with that one, doubt its gonna be outdated in a jippy.. or will it? Should i just gtfo out and mind my own business? lol I dunno i just look at the logical side of the logical situation.. Just get some less new equipment, but some powerful... thats what I did and im fine for now..

Sorry, if this is irrelevant and useless i tried...

you want a new card so go with ati's 5700 or 5800 or whatever they are. they have dx11 and there current top of the line, as for nvidia's dx11 cards well we probably won't see them till Q2 or 2010

well my point was if the 5000 series is indeed stronger
than the 4870 one i had, and can the 4870x2 run dx11
because as i said it still appears to be stronger than
a single 5000 card but tbh i have no idea

and master, i dont have the 4870x2 anymore. well i have
it laying here but its useless

I see, why dont you just get one of the GTx for now, then in 3 - 4 months get one with directx 11 and all that doo doo?

no, 4870 or any 4000 series can't run dx11, only 5700 and 5800 series can.

We all know technology updates fking quick, just get a decent one, like i said and wait till there are some major bugs that get fixed, and more cards run the dx11... 1. ull get more choice 2. it will probably last longer 3. easier to fix, by urself if minor issues pop up 4. we all learned from vista, wait till it gets more commercialized, then get it...

Not worth it cin, cards will drop i can assure you, prices will be cheaper, and you'll have savoured your wait for a dx11 compatible card :)

/done here

good luck, and choose carefully

cin with the way games are bound to consoles atm I wouldn't go much higher than a 4870-90, d11 won't be significant for a while and by the time it is you will be able to pick up a decent card for dirty cheap, the current best d11 solution is the 5870 but is quite large and pricey, the 57-- series ( I highly advice against buying any card from this series ) does support d11 but doesn't have the power to play it, kinda pointless to enable d11 on mid settings and be lagging left and right, gl with your purchase.

edit: forgot to ask at what resolution will you be playing, kinda critical, I'll comment a bit on high end depending on your answer.

I wouldn't worry about DX11. There aren't many games that take advantage of 10 as it is.

doesn't really matter what res you use if you have a high powered card. but if im not mistaken cin has a samsung 2253BW with is 22" so that would be 1680x1050

it matters a lot and if he is playing in 22 he should without question go for a 4870/4890, that will max about everything that is out right now and in the foreseeable future.

i dont really play the high end games, it's mostly for the
3d software. but i wanted to build a pc that would last for
a few years and still be ok, thats why i put in a big card\

get a 5970 lol http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

i am kidding actually.

the 4870x2 is roughly the gtx 295 for nvidia (correct me if i'm wrong). you could wait for nvidia's new gpu line up but i am not sure how good they will be.

I secretly wanted to suggest one of those because they are fairly priced and just deliver.

This link should help explain the difference between various cards. The TL:DR for the article is the 48x models vs the 57x models is that, while the 48x models are usually a bit more powerful the 57x models tend to run cooler, use less power, and have DX11 (although there aren't too many games that support DX11 atm).

Although I'm use to making more budget oriented graphics card options I can try to recommend some good choices. If you're planning on shelling out at least 300 bucks on a card, which if you previously had 4870x2 you probably do, I'd advise getting a 5850 card like this one since the power is comparable to 2x 4870s or 2 5770s plus you can always get a 2nd card when 5850s price drop and/or that one gets old. If you still need a bit more power a 5870 like this one should be a pretty good choice too although you're shelling out an extra 100 bucks for what might not be an extra 25% of power.

You're supposed to have 'fabrieksgarantie' from Ati. I think that's definitely worth checking out. Would be a shame to let that card go to waste.
