i have only gone to public schools. i wouldn't know the difference. but public school was a good time the only thing was that people segregated even at lower grades. But i suppose this happens in most schools.

I'd rather public schools any day, theres more freedom, and if the student wants to learn they can.

I havent known many people who went to private schools, but i knew a few. Didnt like any of them. Stuck up, looked down to people. Just stayed with "their own people".

Round here, public schools allow you to get to know a much larger range of people. People who only think of the educational aspects of schools are idiots.

public schools, no doubt

private schools are full of preppy kids with rich parents, usually too full of themselves, and education is not that much more superior as some people think (at least that's what I know how it happens here)
and home schooling just leads to anti-social kids who can't do shit in life cause of lack of communication abilities

Isn't that the idea of public school? :o

Alot of people want to come to this school, and the school has a good reputation, so I guess "gangsters" or "thugs" don't even try, they just stay at the schools they can do all the shit they want

Guess it's different in Portugal. In the US you HAVE to go to the public school that you are zoned for and the public schools can't deny you. Like all rules there are exceptions, but this one doesn't really budge for the most part.

If the high school offers a special program, they will allow you to join even if you're way off. I had people from different cities in my high school as long as they stayed in the program.

SM-Count wrote:Private schools, hands down, are the best. It's not even a fair comparison unless the public school's either a magnet school or one of those schools in super wealthy areas, money = good education (or at least college acceptance rates :/)

Nahh, it's just something you're raised to believe if you want to private schools. My high school was in the shit ghetto with pretty much everything broken, but we made do. True the normal high school program was pretty easy and pointless, but what many don't know is that many public high school offers AP courses or even IB programs and such. In the end, most everyone that did the program graduated skipping 1-2 years of college, hell we even had kids get scouts from MIT and Havard every now and than, and that's not because of connections or fat wallets.

I'm not saying we're the best high school in the US, it's just a good proof that private schools can be better if it offers the right things and has a good staff. The problem with most is that they can't find teachers able to teach the advanced classes, or just not enough money. I know the IB program was free for us and gave us 1-2 years of college credits, but the school had to pay for that. All the exams we had to take, books, labs.

home schooling is no-no, unless its extra tutoring i guess. I have been to public/private schools, i like public better because there are no uniforms, don't need a admissions test, less strict teachers, and imo more fun. + my county's school system is one of the best in the country so there is no point going to a private here

^ This kid got moved to my school this year and hes been home schooled his whole life.
This dude is the WORST socializer I have ever seen. He is worse than the "nerds" of the class. The teacher asks him a question he can answer it with ease, but if a person asks him something he gets so nervous and says the oddest things like random facts of the world.
I don't want my kids to be an outcasts like this kid, their going to a private or public school and their going to like it >=o

IMO parents who homeschool their kids are douchebags. Unless they are homeschooled for medical reasons.

And I was skimming this thread and someone posted how private schools are better than public schools in some places and vice versa. This is definitely true.

IMO, private schools are a waste of money unless it is nationally ranked. Private schools don't make it easier for you to get into ivy league schools or MIT. Its all about how much you want to go and how much effort you put in yourself. Really, spending $40,000 for 4 years and then going to somewhere like University of Virginia or a UC school? Like you can't do that in a public school?

Home schooling = no-no.

As far as education goes, I see teachers as being more important than facilities. I've gone(know people whom go) to private school...and Imo, it's far worse in there.

They just shoved him into a class they needed to be taught.. He left and went to a public school for 2 reasons money and to teach football. Worked out perfect for him lol getting two things that he wanted most.

I'm sure not all private schools do that, but since all the money they get is from the students that is split between all the workers and paid that way. Less students next year means less money. Whereas a public school you're ganna get the same pay. Would be kinda hard to get people try at private schools. I know I'd go with the public just because of the pay.

Goes to show not all private schools are the best.

I'm not sure about all schools, but my school gets money from the Government. The amount it receives depends on the Teacher:Student ratio.

I'm not sure about other schools, but my school:-

School Fees:
$8,327 - $14,024 p.a (Day Students)
$23,801 - $27,251 p.a (Boarding Students)

^per year and there is 1,029 day students and 276 boarders, so theoretically my school would make (aprox) $11,319,000 from day students and $6,900,000 from boarders ($18.2 million / year). Then it also gets a few million dollars from the government for up-keeping etc.

At those prices, you would expect it to be better than a $200 public school.

I really dont know how people can justify those kind of prices. Even if the school has got better facilities etc, it still isnt going to improve the students chances that much. It's all about how much the student wants it, or how naturally clever they are in some cases.

^Well, that's the thing these days. A tertiary education, or a schools reputation doesn't play as big part as it used to in the job industry. Sure it looks slightly better to say you went to "X" school, but employers are beginning to see through it.

I went to a private school and I'm not smart. I know many public school students who are far smarter than I am, but they put in the effort to learn; I didn't. I still passed high school though.

Went to a private school from K-6, hated every single minute of it. The students were NOT nice, the lunches sucked (was rarely every fully cooked) and they forcefully taught a subject I didn't believe in (do NOT quote that part and make this a religion thread). When I transferred to public school in 6th grade, I started actually enjoying school. I was given more choice with what classes I wanted (band was my favorite), I made more, and better friends that lived close to me. Once in High School, I really started enjoying the fact that I was in public school. My High school offered free transportation, and education at a local vocational center, I took welding. Through me switching to public schooling, I got the opportunity to learn and practice a trade. Had I never bitched at my mom enough that I hated Private school, I would have ended up as one of those strange kids in College that still have no idea what they want to do with their life.
