Laptop has over-heating problems - HELP

Post by Miguez »

Lately my laptop has been shutting down due to overheating, and it's starting to happen more and more often.

I started by placing the back of it over some books to freshen it up, but it kept over-heating, I mean, I *swears* payed 500 £uro for this *swears*, I expect it to work properly!

I'm thinking of returning it to the store, I just need to find that paper which proves that I've bought it (idk how to say it in english).

Anyways, any suggestions? Is this supposed to happen? How can I try to fix it?

Thank you.

Are you giving the bottom fans and vents room? It sounds like that's what you meant when you talked about the book thing. Try setting it on a flat surface like a table, and make sure all the rubber bottom things are still there to prop it up enough.

If you've already done that and it's new still, they yeah, find the receipt and take it back in.

dusty enviroments, warm areas of your house, limited or no ventilation aka you may be covering up the fans with the books

if dust just take of the dust guards and clean them out they are often at the bottom of the laptop, if in a warm area of the house move away from direct sun light and radiators/warm pipes, if your covering fans you do the math move the books or get a proper laptop dock

Okay, I placed it in the table normally, nothing blocking the vents, lets see how it works. With the books I was trying to give the bottom of the laptop more air, since that's what usually warms up. Maybe it's because of my room, or maybe the table, it's made out of wood; But when at my dad's the table is made of glass, and maybe it's fresher, since it rarely overheats there.

Another thing, I've noticed that I usually overheat when I'm playing games, could that have anything to do with it?

Yes, a lot, unfortunately. You're probably overusing the system, probably not meant to play such demanding games, or play games at all :(

Is this some kind of joke? Laptops are not really meant for playing becouse their power is so limited. And when you are playing your laptop has to use it's all potential --> components warm up ---> when they are too hot the laptop shuts down automatically.

4GB RAM; Intel core duo @ 2.0 Ghz

something like that, but I mean, I've been playing games on it most of the time for 4 months with no problems :\

edit: and when I bought it, it was with the purpose of being able to run average games + mobility, since I move alot between houses

I also made a topic and got told that the laptop I was buying could run most average games, which is what I needed, and a desktop is not an option, like I said, I keep moving between my mom's and my dad's, and I need something for both of them

It's dust, had the same problem. Just bring it to a computer store and ask them to clean the inside a bit (or do it yourself, but i dont like messing with stuff i know nothing off).

Its a cooler which you plug into the laptop via USB and it works really really well for me :)

Trust me, I would buy a desktop if it were just as easy to transport as a laptop :p I prefer to play on a laptop because I move around with my computer a lot! For example if I am going to play with a friend. Way easier to transport my laptop :)

But yeah, of course a desktop is better :)

It just depends on your gaming style and how you are going to use your computer

ps. The pictures are not pictures of my cooler but it works the same way ;)

i noticed that if you play in one location, the table itself will get hot and contribute. I found that if I moved to different spots on a desk, table, etc, my laptop doesn't overheat.

A laptop isn't meant to play games on.. that's true, but it isn't supposed to shutdown cause of overheating because of it.

Main reason of overheating would be dusty fans, try to clean the inside

Just like Istune said, get an under-cooler. You want one that sucks air from under the laptop, and blows it out the sides. You also did not state the type of graphics card (if any) you have. My laptop also has 4 GB of RAM and 2.0 GHz intel processor, but the graphics "card" is an integrated(on board) with only 358 MB of video memory. It could run SRO ok at full screen and lowest settings, and got pretty hot, but never over heated with a fan under it. I now only play garrys mod on its lowest settings, and windowed 800x600. Lowering the settings to the game you're playing and its resolution helps quite a bit. And as somebody else already stated, laptops aren't meant for games, regardless if its advertised as so, you want to play games, get a desktop.

My step-brother-in-law uses a lap top to game on, he noticed that if he just aimed his box fan in its direction while he gamed it help to maintain healthy gaming temperatures. So I would imagine that the previous fan device would work splendidly.
