Windows 7 64bit or Vista 64 bit.

There is no point in wasting money on an OS that will be obsolete in a few years(XP). Besides, with your specs, you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference between Vista and XP anyway. I guess you should go with Windows 7 because its the newer version and offers slight improvements over Vista.

Ok here some effort from a person who built a new (high end) computer 2 months ago and has been using W7 RC since.

W7 Idles on 1.5 GB of my 6GB DDR3 ram, and appears to be faster than Vista. Better features in overall.

Not a single compatibility issue so far, and trust me, I've installed a LOT.
All games work really well.

I'm just gonna buy the full W7 original copy the day it hits stores :)
I, as a high end user, LOVE windows 7.

I've done so much shit with it you wouldn't believe.

Been training the (new and improved) speech recognition feature and I can do anything in windows faster than you can type and/or click at the same time. That includes browsing, posting this message by talking to it, and submitting and back to youtube and hit play. All with my mouth.

Seriously it's brilliant. You can download a free W7 RC copy (the one im using) and use that till okt 22nd :)

Make sure you get 64bit and you're good to go. Stick the ISO you downloaded on a DVD and shove that into your new rig :D

I laugh at those who still use vista as an operating system. Vista is like windows 2000, and windows 7 is like Windows Xp :D

Windows xp and Windows 7 For the win.

Windows 2000 was a fine operating system. It wasn't as compatible with games, but it wasn't meant to be. It was a pretty solid business OS for its time. I'd say Vista is more like Windows ME. I like Windows RG the best! Look it up!

vista is not bad you just need a non shit computer to run it. also who cares if it takes 1gb of ram? on a non shit computer your going to have 4+ i think your fine. not to mention most games run on 2 cores not more (though this will change some time soon) and programs can not use more then 4gb of ram (64bit OS or not). i use vista every day and here are the specs to the computer

dual core 3ghz
1gb ram
256mb graphics (forget the model number)

these are just the basics...... vista runs fast on them i even played high end games lag free.

ok now i have tried installing this user mod of windows xp. I have a CD-R disk of the windows xp 2009 vienna edition, a user mod. I saw from the comments that most people were able to run it on their system. I tried boot with it and it will begin loading files but than stop with this message:

" File \i386\vgaoem.fon could not be loaded Error code is 7 "

And from there i can only exit setup. I wonder if anyone can give me and idea of what the error means. I have not touched any settings in the BIOS/CMOS setup since I dont know about that stuff at all. There is no OS on the system since All my hardware is new except for the optical drive, i swapped out which is very old, so could it be a disk read error somehow?

Or they have experience using Vista in a home and corporate environment, trying to network vista with XP or vista with Linux. Vista doesn't always play well with other operating systems.

Definitely agree with Master_Wong. Windows Vista is like Windows ME.
