Anzac Day!

Post by Snoopy »

Is tomorrow! Seeing as there's a few Australian's and New Zealanders on this forum I'd like to hope you reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives in order to create the freedom we now luckily have.

Brief History of Anzac Day for those who don't know:

Wikipedia wrote:Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand. This is a rare instance of two sovereign countries not only sharing the same national day, but making reference to both countries in its name.

At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. And the total loss of the War against the Ottoman Empire was 60,000 Australians

When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 14 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world and really put Australia on the map, as not just a big island full of Kangaroos.

3000 stupid New Zealanders. Most of them thought that it would be fun to travel around the world, little did they know they were going to be stuck in a boat for 10 weeks squeezed together with other men.

Well if it wasn't that way, New Zealand wouldn't even be a country. You wouldn't be living there, and if you would. It may be ruled under a dictator. People need to be more grateful for what they have. I guess it takes for someone to lose something or someone to realise what it is they had in the first place.

But what difference did they make? Most of them died anyway.

Sure I can appreciate them fighting and dying for their country and all, but it just seems to me that they died in vain. I studied the battle at Gallipoli at school, and well the Anzacs didn't even land at the right beach, a couple hundred of them were killed before they even did anything and the remaining few just camped the beach until they retreated.

I too have studied and it is more than just the human casualties. It is the people who went to war in order to create freedom for their country; for US.

They may have landed in Anzac Cove instead of Brighton Beach but that is beside the point. These soldiers valued mateship, and their country. So much so, that 14 year olds were enrolling in the ADF (Australian Defense Force) to fight for their country. Also the bravery of the soldiers, even though we lost. For example, Simpson and his Donkey.

Image

Australian War Memorial wrote:Simpson would not have made a good peacetime soldier, and he was recklessly independent in war. Instructed to recover and help the wounded he undertook this work enthusiastically. Famously, he used a small donkey to carry men down from the front line, often exposing himself to fire. The bravery of this "man with the donkey" soon became the most prominent symbol of Australian courage and tenacity on Gallipoli.

The fact you say they died in vain I find somewhat offensive. You saying they died for no reason? I can't imagine what our countries would be like without having been in this war as it is vital in Australia's and New Zealand's history. Not that it matters anyway, New Zealand always relies on Australia.

I didn't mean anything offensive, as I said I can appreciate them fighting and dying for our countries, but I'm just saying they didn't achieve much :\

lol Tsume man.

First of all, 3000 is like half of the population of New Zealand, so it's a more significant number already. Second of all, if people die for freedom, but their mission went down the toilet because of some mistakes, it doesn't mean we should just say they did jack shit and don't honor their sacrifice.
It doesn't even matter if they landed on the beach drunk, they went there to defend everyone's freedom, even yours, and you shouldn't say they were a bunch of retards and died for nothing, cause they didn't.

That was the problem of Propaganda posters. There was no form on international media (TV etc). Perhaps news papers etc.
