American anime VS mainstream Japanese anime

Post by .Banshee »

I've just been rewatching the whole Avatar series and I think it trumps most mainstream animes like Bleach and Naruto. It beats them handsdown and it didn't need swearing and gore to that. The Boondocks is great as well and I would watch that before I watched One Piece or DragonBallZ. So what do you think? American or Japanese?

Japanese Anime > American Anime/Cartoon

Avatar was the ONLY good American anime, but I doesn't compare to all the good Japanese ones.

I didn't watch it, but still, theres only a handfull of good American Anime

Edit: You should change American Anime to American Cartoon, it might confuse people like myself to only include cartoons that are similar to Japanese Anime

With that said, ill throw in all the classic superhero cartoons with the American category

First of all, Boondocks, Aqua Teen, Sealab and the Williams Street cartoons follow a very different formula than Japanime. They're basically sitcoms in cartoon form, they very rarely or never have a plot line that spans a "season". And they're mostly comedies, whereas many animes are serious in nature or deal with serious issues, even when they're humorous, and the plot lines span multiple episodes. The cartoon medium is just not taken seriously in the US (thanks Hanna Barbara!) I don't know that I would compare the two forms as such. That said, I love Williams Street and almost all of their work, and there are a lot of animes I really enjoy. For comedy, I prefer US adult cartoons and for drama, action, adventure anime :D

First of all there is no such thing as american anime lol

and as someone said cartoons are like 98% comedy, so you can't compare such things, would be like comparing a pencil and the sun, <like wtf
anime is more 'serious', it follows a story but ofcourse there's always an exception and not all anime is like that, but IMO anime>cartoon

The Japanese basically invented anime...no one stands out enough to be fairly compared.

The animated Spawn was about as far away from anime as you could get.

theres no such thing as american anime. The Boondocks was drawn in the style that it was because the artist likes anime alot. The show was drawn in that style because the comic strip was drawn in that style. That doesn't make it anime.

also contrary to popular belief their are plenty of comedy animes out there, they just don't seem to have as much appeal over the giant breasted, blood filled, power battles that make up shonen. I'd say american comedy cartoons are better but really japanese humor is made for japanese people so im not expected nor should i expect to get most of what they say especially if its an unamericanized translation.

as for avatar>than naruto and Bleach it was certainly better written, had much better direction, and was very refreshing to see on TV but it had that Rated-G nicklodean thing hanging over it the whole time and i think that brought it down a few notches. For what it was it was amazing but in comparison to less censored material of the same genre a lacks a certain punch. Throw in some adult themes, some blood, some up close dying and it'd be a real winrar... I'd rather watch Invader Zim over all of them because evn with nickoldean over its head it still managed to be slightly grotesque and amazingly funny without bordering that realm of stupid humor (spongebob, chowder, flapjack)

Overall, I'd have to say Japanese animation is better than American animation.
The amount of detail put into simple things like hair and background scenery, the quality of the voice actors, and the music choices are generally much better than any American animation. Exceptions to this are usually intentional(see musashi gundou :banghead:).

^ LOL!
Of course, Japanese Anime Owns American Cartoons.
It's because Anime was born in Japan. (so almost all the Anime series [75% production of Japan] comes from there.)

I have to add, some japanese ppl are cracked up =] That's why their works are totally originals.
