Earth Hour '09

Post by Snoopy »

Earth Hour 2009 was a great success. This time last year I made a thread similar creating awareness of Earth Hour.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

Good to see that Earth Hour has gone from one city to an international phenomenon.

Earth Hour '07 Results:

Residents and businesses across the city showed their support for Earth Hour resulting in an impressive 10.2% drop in energy usage across the usually glittering CBD, according to Energy Australia.

How am I selfish ? Sorry, I'm not mainstream enough for you. Sorry I don't follow the media into bullshit like this. I care for the people around me. Not people that will be born in 300+ years.

If it is that hard to turn off your lights for a hour, then something is wrong with you. The little things that you can do will add up. Those small changes have large effects around you. But you think it is just media, and mainstream. Look around you, you might think nothing will happen in your life time. But it is already showing evidence of change around the globe.
Also, when you have kids - if you have kids... - look them in the eye when they are old enough and say you don't care at all for their kids, and their kids, and so on.

Know what would be funny? If instead of getting people to believe that turning off their lights was enough to say they did their part, we got them to recycle, or clean up around town, or something else more tangible? I think that would have far more impact than saving an hour's worth of juice once a year.

Everyone turning their lights off at the same causes more harm than good.

The reason I did not bother to comment on the rest is because it's the standard reply. Ohhh, you don't care botu this right .. it's the little things that count. No, actually it's not.

Also, for you I can not be arsed to go find a source for what I said. But think of it this way. Millions of people turning their lights off at the same time = Electricity central raped.

You got a point there, when everyone turns of there lights there is a 'negative'(?) peak. When everyone turns all the lights on again there will be a 'positive'(?) peak and the elecricity centrals won't be able to give enough electricity and stuffz. But I didn't see any problems yesterday..

Perhaps because they accounted for it? Thus calibrating the machine's to handle the sudden decrease of energy demands, followed by the sudden increase of energy demands? Even though the peak isn't so sudden? I would like to see what they plan to do when it isn't announced very prematurely, and people randomly turn off their stuff. They probably have expectancy or fail- safe or zone limiters in place though, to handle at least 30% of the unexpected increases in energy demand.

But still.. *Ponder.*

Reason: There's lot of people like Crumpets who wouldn't do it. In Australia 46 or so % of people turned off their lights which was the largest amount of people from one country in the world. If them people had to do it multiple times a day, they would soon lack interest and stop doing it.

You think one hour of lights off in a year would help earth somehow?
LOL, just LOL... same thing with that black screened-google crap, it wont do shit.

Solution: Dont use lights at all, if you wanna improve anything
