test your antivirus

Post by vermillion »

1. create an empty file anywhere on your pc, conveniently on your desktop (find an empty space, right click, new -> text document).

2. open your newly created file (probably with default name new text document.txt)

3. copy and paste this code on that file.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

4. save your file as test.com

5. expect to see your antivirus software jump into action. (this is a harmless test so you can just ignore what your antivirus is suggesting.)

6. if your antivirus software does not do anything...

Hah cool my antivirus picked it up. Thanks Symantec. That's actually a pretty cool trick, thanks for showing us that.

Me neither. Protection is for the weak. :P

I suppose I could install some scanner... I'd have to look in the APT repositories to see if anything is available I suppose.

I've been using Avast for 2 years and NEVER had problems with viruses, Avast cleans them always, but it doesn't register this test, dunno why
