Youtube stores the video in the resolution that you upload it in. Most videos are uploaded at 325x420 or something like to take advantage of the small resolution so they aren't going to get any better. Almost no videos are uploaded in widescreen because there wasn't really a point because it would lose quality once youtube compresses it into the little small viewing box.

Yeah, if the video was rendered in 16:9 then they fill the whole thing. But sadly most people use movie maker and or sony vegas youtube button and it auto puts it in 4:3.
