Re: Post your Rig Pik. (aka)Computer Help Center
Going SLI or Crossfire doesn't nearly improve graphics performance 2x, and in most cases isn't supported or has a negligible boost in performance for lots of games. It's much more stable and cost efficient to go with one card.
Lots of people who get SLI/Crossfire only get it because they think it's 1337, but know nothing about computers.

Dream machines?
I like that concept; why blur it with pretend like you owns?
(can you spel fixed income here?)
But if you had unlimited income and wanted a Über (gaming) rig, what would it be?
(I had a water-cooled way back when, but now it's not so needed)
Alienware Area-51 m9750 17-inch screen Notebook / laptop is cheap enuf now @ $1,400.
oc, after I 'played' with customization it was US$3,934.00 but oh well...

I dont understand why people pay so much for like dell,hp,sony desktop computers when you can just simply build your own for 50% of it.
Anyways, how does water cooling work. I mean like i dont see any wires all i see is water running from your hd to your Motherboard?

Google "Koolance Cases"
Or look > HERE <
(click where it say 'More Picturs')
-OR- > HERE <
They run tubes to various components and carry liquid for extra cooling.

the water obsorbs the heat while at the same time cooling it down with cold water.
why do you people have 4 and over cres? most programs don't even use 2 yet, useless unless your rendering things (octo core is still useless)

Quads are okay because the Internet is migrating toward tru digital (from Download weighted analog). Services will be increased, they're just ahead of their day is all. $ to burn has something to do with it too, i'd guess. It's another game, chase the CPU, and the programmers up the requirements, chase the programs and the hardware manufacturer's take their turn. Upward spiral.X-Lax wrote:why do you people have 4 and over cres? most programs don't even use 2 yet, useless unless your rendering things (octo core is still useless)
The cycle used to be "Faster /// Cheaper /// Smaller" <~~~~ Pick any two, wait six (6) months, and you can (should) upgrade. Programmers enter with "cool factor" and increase demand. Carriers and Providers are coming into the Multi-Billion $ industry big time now and soon more so.

What program do you use for 3D? I wanted to try and get into doing some of that stuff.
I use 3DS MAX 8 ATM, but I'm gonna buy 3DS MAX 2008 (I buy every other major version update), but if you want something legally free get Blender, not as good but it works!

but the games that support are more common than before, I think it's even on CoD2 at minimum O_O, but I like it for 3D Modeling, you have to get a plug-in though for it to be supported but it is worth it every bit, and the that pc server is gonna cost $17k

Before even thinking about dropping $20k or so, consider IBM Midrange Computers like System i (what used to be called AS400's).
Cross Platform for Linux, Windows Apps & Unix. 3D Rendering.
Business Case for IBM System i 515 Express:
Common features
- IBM® POWER5+™ processors—the tenth generation of 64-bit processor technology
- Multi-platform operating environment with capability to run i5/OS®, Linux®, IBM AIX 5L™ and application environments such as IBM WebSphere® and Java™
- On demand pricing options help match purchasing flexibility with technology and business needs
- Extensive portfolio of proven solutions available in all operating environments
- Full 5250 OLTP processing capability
Hardware summary
- Includes i5/OS and can add Linux and AIX 5L operating systems
- 1-way offering provides up to 3800 CPW, 2-way provides up to 7100 CPW
(CPW = Commercial Processing Workload)
- Up to 16 GB memory
- Up to 8 disk drives—560 GB of capacity
- 6 PCI-X slots, up to 12 WAN lines or 8 LANs
- Integrated Ethernet LANs and disk controller
- Integrated DVD-ROM
- Base 2-line WAN
You were talking about a server for your home lan, right?
Pardon my asking but do you have a home (of your own)? An intranet maybe?
Midrange computers are what they sound like, the box spec'd in between the PC (mini) and a mainframe.
For instance, you could get 5250 Emulation software and do rendering on dumb terminals.
Are you certain your connection can drop enuf game data to use that 5GB of Vid Memory you mention?
If it does and you can justify the 5GB of Vid memory, you'll have to upgrade your DASD from 80Gig to more like ½ Terabyte or so. You'll also want 10 GbE. 10 Gigabit Ethernet over Copper (IEEE 802.3ak) is good for 15 meters (in your Datacenter / Bedroom).
I don't know of anything that can put out that much demand yet, but here's my 2¢ for what it's worth:
Rent a Systems Analyst to think it out and save a couple bucks, or just buy some CDs (Certificates of Deposit) and save yer dough.

No worries. Discount some of the stuff posted here (without screenshots). I sure do.
As for your rig? It all comes down to economics and choices.
My philosophy is the same for computers as it is for motorcycles...
Creature comfort. If I had a choice of upgrading my motherboard (too much work) or getting a new chair for my butt to be comfy, I'm pretty sure the direction would the same as if I was choosing a long-haul bike. When I bought my most recent bike the choice was between Yamaha and Honda. You should have heard the honda guy when I told him I'd go with a Yammy because he didn't have the seat I liked.

b'cuz he said it first-n-best:
Some time back (ok, 1979) I built a system to monitor a Dutch nuclear reactor. It monitored temperatures, rod positions, and so on. Nothing important (cough). There was no suggestion of keeping costs down to save money (and I'm glad).
The system had two colour graphic displays, a printer or two, and 4 operator terminals. It ran a real time, multi tasking operating system (called RSX11).
The main system had 128kb of memory. Yes, 128kb.
Today my dev machine has 2Gb of memory and the 3Ghz processor must - surely - be some thousands of times as fast.
So I have 15,000 times as much memory, a processor perhaps 3,000 times as fast (I'm guessing, as figures are hard to pin down). That sounds like 445 million times as much power to me.
And what do we do with all this grunt? Well damn, solitare looks good these days.
So, were the old programmers really, really good? [We were, we were ...]
Are the new ones really, really bad? [hang on, I'm still at it ...]
Have we stopped caring about size and performance of programs?
I think all of these things are slightly true - we used to care deeply about program speed and footprint. Now we don't.
I suspect it has gone much too far - programs are far slower to load than they were even 5 years ago - they are large and bloated, and don't share things well. Anybody remember Sidekick - it was wonderful - and it was available at the touch of key (ok, 2 keys). Remember how FAST it was? I know it didn't do much, but it was dashed useful.
And I still can't beleive I still write "for" loops.
*sigh (eyes glazed over: "I want that razer stuffs.")

Just get the Piranha if I were you. It'll save you around $50 and the mic won't keep getting disconnected like the one in my Barracuda. It gets really annoying after a while when I hear people say things like "hello? hello? Ast/ink/inky/dave/david you there?"...then I know it's time for me to give the mic a little push to lock it down again

Me and my sister got an ATI Radeon x1600 Saffire Crossfire,
If im not rong,Crossfire allows u to use another copy of the same video card and put it ur PC,
so basically I could take my sister's video card, put it in my computer, and the graphics would increase?
Clearify me on this plz =D
As for Processor,I think that right now, only DualCore is needed,Quad&Octo are for money burning >.<
