Stupid, I don't see the point in it if it's only for a few popular videos.
Youtube's quality sucks, everyone knows that. Other video sites have way better quality, they just aren't as popular as videosites. If they want to improve their quality, it should be for ALL videos IMO.
Maybe in the future we can all choose quality of every video. Since this is new, maybe they wanted to try and see how well it works and if people use it alot before they change it to all videos.

I think the whole thing is with Youtube that it the size went down...
Veoh has the same vids, but uses bigger screen so better quality..
i thought all the videos got the quality update? or simply they just added a lower quality option and retained the normal video as the "high quality". not sure though.
The button is new, but the ability to watch videos in higher quality has always been there for months. You can watch all videos in higher quality. Youtube also allows you to upload videos that are 1GB size now and suggests that videos are uploaded at 640x480. You can conclude that over time youtube will slowly upgrade their standard resolution as they see fit.
Notice the difference? Adding fmt=18 to the end of url will display the video in 480x360 resolution, 512kbps bit rate, and stero AAC sound if available. Many videos on youtube were uploaded at 320x240 with mono sound to make the most of the old resolution, so adding fmt=18 to the end of the video won't make a difference in quality.
You can also go into your youtube account settings to set youtube to automatically play ther video in its higher quality format if available. Under Account, select "Video Playback Quality" to toggle this feature.

useful post as always dude. thx for sharing the info.
Edit: Btw to get to the page with the higher quality, u have to add "&fmt=18" not "fmt=18.

Pretty neat, didn't knew that yet. Tried it on one of my vids, quality is somewhat improved, but still doesn't beat the standard quality WeGame offers.
