Seen on G4 today, they developing an internet that is so redicously fast it can download massive files in seconds, and even carry holographic images, we going to be doing some star wars sh*t soon lolz
The internet could soon be made obsolete by “the grid”. The lightning-fast replacement will be capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.
At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, the grid will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
The latest spinoff from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players, and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

It looks really promising, but nevertheless it will probably take years to realize this as the new standard and it will be really expensive. : \
Idk...computer techs take fast, usually only money is the bottleneck. This will be a interesting dev
Computer techs go fast, but the entire wiring system of today's standard internet cables has to be replaced all over the world from my understanding of the article.
This is because the internet has evolved by linking together a hotchpotch of cables and routing equipment, much of which was originally designed for telephone calls and which lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.
By contrast, the grid has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the deluge of data. The 55,000 servers already installed are expected to rise to 200,000 in two years.
The development of this new superinternet is actually a new type of cable that makes this super speed possible. So we'll need to have those cables everywhere I guess.
I stopped reading there. Then again, I read the same story two days ago after seeing it on digg. G4 is a parasite.

Who says you can't run your own server? Even Microsoft is pushing for it with Windows Home Server.

Fiber-optic cables have been around for years, the problem is just deploying them at a larger scale.

Oh ok, I thought the whole 'grid' thing was a network of newly designed cables.
Anyways can't image how great it will be.. no more lag
And taking illegal downloading to a whole new level XD

About how much would this cost to the public?
Alot maybe... lol a real lot. For some reason if its the same price as a reg broadband i would be pissed!!!! For some reason i like having a faster internet than most people, i feel superior

Currently, they're most likely very expensive, following the pattern new technologies. Soon after their release, prices will drop, especially when the expansion of Moore's law is applied here, where faster cables are created afterwards creating the price cut.
We'll eventually reach a limit and then enter another version of the Internet 3.0+++ with the use of nanotechnology and maybe even combined with some weirdass bio-genetic-enzyme-thingy like the Protein-Coated Disc scientists are developing.

G4 is cool ;d.
That is if its G4tv? > >.
G4 killed a perfectly good channel and replaced it with filth to appeal to the lowest common denominator, all in the name of a wider viewer base. Fortunately, Revision3 fills some of the gap left behind, although it will never be the same as the old days.
For some reason all the women hosts on G4 annoy me. I can't see beautiful model women knowing shit about video games. When they talk about them I only think to myself "They have no idea what they are even talking about" > >
Of course I haven't watched G4 since last May. I prefer Epileptic Gaming <3
