I use stock brushes, usually one of the grainy little circle ones. I just prefer one with sharp edges

and I always smudge with 69% strength...

Done the tutorial 'cause I loved the steps. And I done it pretty fast. :/
Put some of my touches too, the displacements looked a bit raw if you ask me.

Eh, I followed your tut, but with the stock + render I have it didn't look so good, so I did some minor changes, the outcome didn't meet my expectations, I'll try it later with dif stock and render:
