Almost looks like a professionally done poster for the game. You killed it with the special effects at the top left, though.

I agree with Aby, try and erase or smear that thing coming out of his right shoulder some. It really kills the whole thing. Other than that I like it a lot, especially since it's a Halo piece. 9/10

The lighting should be above to the left a bit.

Sorry to say, but kinda shows how bad the lightsource is. You replaced it in a whim, there should be more to one then that.

The light is *actually* coming from the direction you would be looking at the picture from, and so you can't place it anywhere on the picture and be correct. It's better without one.

in my opnioin, the lightsource was better in v2 than the most recent one. the sheen on his faceguard is on the right side, so a light source on the left isn't appropriate in my opinion. i think more centered than it is in v2, but not as far left as it is in v3 would be good.
my only problem with it is that while i feel like the top of the piece has nice depth, the bottom, near his legs, seems a little flat to me. perhaps the c4d you used (the red one people were complaining about before) could be brought out in that region to create more depth?
bear in mind that these are things i struggle with too, which is probably why i keyed in on them. halo ftw, btw :)
7/10 from me.

Tips?
Incorporate the lightsource at an earlier stage, use some applied images, sharpened, blurred, dodge, burn, gradient maps, photo filtres, you name it.
This will colour the lightsourse together with the colours you're using in the gradient maps, etc.
You could also try smudging it a little, but please try adding more then this.
Oh, and try some
Filter->Render->Lighting Effects
Or anything else in the 'render' section to enhance the lighting.

when is it appropriate to use "apply image"? i understand what it does, but i always feel that by using that feature i relinquish control over my laters.

im not entirely sure, but i normally use apply image a couple of times in a piece
- i use it when i want to try out something like a lighting effect on my whole piece
- i use it when i want to do a tool on several layers at once (i hide the other
layers, make new and apply image)
- i use it when im done to fix up some details sometimes
but idk, probably there is better use for it
