Photoshop CS3

Well since I have gotten Photoshop, I havent been able to open some images. When i try to open them it says "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file." What do I do?
Since I know the majority of you use photoshop.
And also most of the filters are grayed and I can not use them,why?

The one you got from my site is... the Portable version.. not the Full version.
