If your just gona use the pentool why not just do it in PS?

Because illustrator calculates everything based on vectors. Which means, no pixelly sides. Gief sec, Ill post a comparison picture.

Photoshop(Soory for the horrible pink color):
Illustrator:
As you can see, no pixelly edges, much better quality. Both are 10x10 pixel canvas size, zoomed to 1600% on Photoshop, 6400% on Illustrator. As you can see, Illustrator is WAY further zoomed in, yet a better quality. ^^ Awesome for vectors. <3

Vector images are calculated based on a mathematic algorithm, therefore they dont even have pixels.
Raster images are pixel based.
