back from the dead

I just decided to get into Photoshop again, I did some really mediocre sigs couple years ago, I wasn't very good but I decided to pick it up again anyways since summer just came and I have some more free time.

so here's my first piece, following a tutorial* :

I was still getting used to the interface again, trying to find where all the stuff was, learning how to use all the tools again, failing on the use of the pen tool as you can see...

I don't really like it, but I would like some C&C and maybe some tips. I usually read the tutorials on gfxvoid.

I might be posting more stuff here in the future.

Update:

Did some recoloring on a black and white picture, following a tutorial* aswell, enjoyed it quite a bit!

Nice outcome on the first one. Can't be bothered to type a huge text but always remember about depth. The C4D that you've added looks flat, like on a glass window.

KIU

Thank you, and yeah that's exactly what's wrong with it.

What does KIU mean by the way?

Edit: Oh I think it means keep it up.

ugh I got some virus and now whenever I open Photoshop I get the user license agreement window which just freezes and doesn't allow me to click on any option...

Edit & Update:

Managed to fix it, made a new sig:

C&C appreciated, I really like it but I feel that there's something missing. I tried to focus more on depth this time around.

Also, could anyone link me to a decent tutorial that explains how you can make an avatar out of your signature?

Well for the avatar signature you could just shrink/crop lol and add some new lighting to it to make it more avatar-ish.
For the sig, I don't like directly to the right of the focal - the text is too hard to see, and the swirls just look strange next to him, and the filter effect (?) right below the focal I think doesn't really go to be honest. The coloring and lighting are pretty good and I like the sig but my main beef is right on the right of the focal, it doesn't match with the depth at all and looks strange (the pen tool swirls).

I see. What about the cigar pen tool?

I meant to make the text hard to see so that it wouldn't drag your eyes to it, while still being there if you wanted to read it.

On the left it's ok but right to the right of the focal that pen tool looking thing - the white streaks I think don't really fit well. Still not feeling the text lol..

Depth isn't just blurring everything. Now he looks just pasted on there. Try fking around and see what happens.

Haha yeah that's what I did really...

And I suck with text, always did.

What I like to do is make like 4-5 layers of different depth (blur,sharpen,etc.). Then you erase parts of the layer for different parts of your signature. Like in this case, maybe keep the sharpen layer just to the glasses.

What I'm trying to say is that you should have more than two levels of depth. :)
