I'm sorry but I fear that this one is more of a step to the wrong direction. The smudging is too messy and there's really not a lot of addition to the subject. It just seems a bit out of place and the contrast is too strong. The missing sides are roughly cut -- they don't give the appearance of smoothly fading. Maybe it's just me though. It might be appealing in some cases, but not in this one (from my perspective at least). In addition, the direction of light is kind of hard to determine since it's coming from multiple sources - again, works in some pieces but not this one.
It can be used to add a little "mess" in the piece. However, there has to be a form. I understand that you're trying to make diagonal shapes for the flow with the smudging but the outcome simply looks too messy that no form comes out of it -- as I mentioned above, it looks more like the foundation of a work-in-progress. There's no depth or form in it.
(I did the same in some of my sigs when I was starting out and got the same criticisms from people.)
I think you're thinking of grunge, ex. Smudge style sigs are usually more clean hence why they always seem so incomplete because of the simplicity of them.
