Tablet Question

I'm looking into buying a tablet for my photoshopping. I mostly do photo manipulation.
So far I've seen those wacom bamboo tablets, but to me they look like gimmicks rather that tools.
Any suggestions on good quality tablets that have a not so astronomical price
