I wanna get creative!

So my sig's gone, imageshack isn't hosting it any more.
I have found some older version here on the forum and I tried to work with that but can't find the font. Anyways, this sparked the idea to try and get started with the paintshop/photoshop again. (I once tried but I failed to even get stocks and that kind of shit in my program so I decided it wasn't for me)
So now I need to know some stuff, like which program to use? What do you guys use, or what can you recommend to a noob?
I like to make abstract things, like my old sig. Maybe I'll try to use a stock of some sort when I get the skills to paste one into my image, but for now I need something simple.
Ok I just realized I typed all that crap for nothing, I just need to know what program to use to make signatures and backgrounds.

I use CS3, though I have 4 I never installed it. Doesn't really matter which one you use, differences are minor.

Ok so I have acquired Paint Shop Pro 12 or something like that, my sister is pretty leet with that program so I figured I could get some good advice from the woman.
Turns out she's no good for me.
I am just experimenting now with stock backgrounds from windows and I had this idea where I want the entire picture in black and white, but with just one aspect in color. How do I get around to do that?
Just let me know if this is not the forum to spam with noob questions (but do direct me to some other place?)
Edit: well after messing around a bit I got this. But I had to do it all different than I wanted. I just wanted to like cut out the color waterfall and paste it in the black and white picture.
It's a work in progress. (And yes it's from the standard windows background)

I started with paint shop pro 10 or 11. Put I've been using photoshop cs3 for more than 6 months. Gotta say that PS is much better.

PS is short for Photoshop, coincidence that it can be understood as Paintshop as well. ;d

**** it, I am stranding at the same area where I stranded last time.
How do I get other images in my image? Like I have this waterfall shit, and I wanna put the cover warrior from Apocalypto on top in the white flash. I already deleted the background from the warrior but I also want to resize him, but shit isn't working out.
Paint is so simple and efficient, seriously good program.
edit: ok **** it nvm, I'm going to have to accept paintshop shit is not for me. I'm like a fish on dry land with that program. Even my technologically impaired sister owns me in this shit.

Not much of a difference between CS4 and CS3, so I still use CS3.
