Yearbook background design ideas

Ok, so like I've said before I'm the editor of my schools yearbook and I need some help with background designs for some of our pages. We have some good backgrounds that come on the website but a lot of them are not usable. They are either distracting or have too much design (ie. a huge focal). So I was hoping for some suggestions for some simple layouts for the sports pages. I'm not big on borders or too much of a theme (like baseball mits and bats on a baseball page). Any ideas? Thanks.

Put a baseball bat, basketball, soccer ball, and volleyball on the sports background. Do some pentooling on it. Then, brush a little and smudge.

Lul, smudge in yearbook...
Yearbooks aren't sigs for forums, they are a...Yearbook.
Small designs and little borders are just fine.

Remember that "less is more". No point in spamming lot of effects in yearbook.

Thanks for the ideas. Keep em coming if you get any more. You wouldnt believe the default backgrounds that come with the software. Some are just plain gaudy and then there are ones the look exactly like a c4d or a stock pic. Stuff like asteroids and stuff. Its amazing. Not bad for a sig but for a yearbook? Honestly...
