Photoshop Question

Probably a nooby question but how do you separate an image from it's background
so you can put it on another background?
with photoshop
or is there another program that's better ?

OK, i got that :)
new question!
when i got the image i want, i need to add it on a Word document
but
when i save the picture to a white background, it also has the white background on my word document so i dont see the rest of my text
how can i just take the image without a background?

You need to get rid of that white background and use a transparent background. That's the thing that looks like a checkered board.
