So I started WoW. I never thought I would but I did.

So I decided to make a mage. Well going to do so on Sunday because Blizzard likes to trick me. Apparently you need a Credit card to register an account, which I don't have, or enter the code from a gaming card, which I can only buy tonight. Anyway I have a few questions.

1: Is there a big difference between Alliance and Horde on a EU PvP server? I presume both have their fare share of immature 12 year olds and decent mature players.

2: As I told before: I'm going to roll a mage. Is there any race that's obviously better at being one or doesn't it really matter?

3: I'm going to start with mining but I'm unsure about 2nd profession. Should I go for jewel crafting (planning to do so in the end) or with skinning in the beginning? Or should I start with something else as 2nd profession?

4: Is there any need to buy WoTL if I'm not lvl 70? Or can I play with normal WoW and TBC first untill I'm near lvl 70?

5: Anyone here plays on a EU PvP server who likes to help a new player? I fine with either faction as long as you tell me before Sunday 5PM 'ish.

1. Depends on the server. You can check out some statistics here: http://www.warcraftrealms.com/eu_realms ... ServerType Be aware that some of the ratios are not accurate. When choosing a PvP server, I recommend picking one with a close 1A:1H ratio so that way, you can get a fairly good amount of world PvP. Rolling a Horde and being on a PvP server with say, 3:1 Horde-to-Alliance ratio kinda beats the purpose of being in a PvP server for me. Might as well go PvE.

2. Races aren't really that big of a factor when it comes to deciding a class, with the exception of class restrictions. For Ally's, Gnomes have the highest intellect right at the start. For Horde's, Blood Elves have the highest intellect. Aside from the starting stats, you can also look at racial skills/passives, as they are helpful sometimes.

The bottom line: races don't play a large factor in your performance as a mage, or any other class. As long as you're well-geared and know how to play it, you're good to go.

3. You can hold off WotLK for now. You can still use glyphs even though they were introduced on that expansion. You can also still have the inscription profession even though it was also introduced on WotLK. If you want to go pass 70 and/or max your profession to 450, then buy WotLK. Or, you can also get it now if you really want to cap asap as people can do it in less than a month.

1. From what I've been through, Horde are better in PvP in general.

2. Like Izaach mentioned, racials doesn't really matter much but you might want to give it an extra thought if you're really into PvP, since some of them do play a role in PvP environment.

Not entirely true. It just depends on the group. Several times i have had a great group who did everything perfectly. One time though, the Horde were also perfect, and because of that we had the longest BG i have ever been in, at just over 2 hours.

Most of the time though, Horde seem better.

They just have more healers, always. lol

1.) you answered question yourself. Roll what you prefer. Obviously the races look different, but you should also take into account the looks of cities. Alliance cities look like medieval cities and horde cities look like prehistoric villages.

2.) Unlike what these noobs here say (:P) races, and most importantly their racial abilities really matter.
If you're going to roll Horde, there is no debate, you should roll Undead. There's some shitty PvE racials but who cares about that, all PvE racials are trivial except for human. There's no racial for PvE that gives such a substantial boost to PvE performance that it's worth taking the race for.
For pvp, free fear trinket is a huge advantage. For example mirror match rogue/priest, double undead rogue/priest will win if they're equally skilled, EVERY GAME!
Racials will win you games and will win you world pvp. If this game would be about looks it wouldn't be called warcraft, so choose the best race and not the one "you can look at for hours".
For Alliance there's only two options, Human and Gnome. It's less of a difference than it is with Horde, so if you really must look cute you can go for Gnome, but the best choice is human.

If you're choosing another class and have to struggle with other races, undead and human are superior to almost every class except for Priest where Dwarf is better. Trolls, Night elfs and Draenei should be avoided like the plague if you want good racials.

3.) Personally I would take mining/skinning and save the mining mats (or if you're having a hard start just sell them, later on their value will be trivial). Level to 80 and keep those professions leveled. When you get to 80 you can do whatever it is you please to make gold and combine it with skinning. Once you got enough gold, switch skinning or mining over to JC.

4.) No there isn't. Classic wow: maximum 60, TBC 70, WOTLK 80. Buy expansion when you hit the levels and still like the game.

5.) Highly suggest you find someone who wants to reroll who will recruit you as a friend. It's +300% XP and a lot more good stuff. You need to really play together though,
Btw, you can play without adding the gamecard, you can also just start a trial account and level to 20 before paying for anything.
Anyways, I'm not much of a noob helping person and I really cba to boost people through instances and that good stuff, but I can give you gold which will really help you get going. I don't play any more but the account is still activated till Monday (just your luck ) so I can give you quite some gold. You should roll Kazzak alliance for that.

and edit @ Horde being better in PVP; Alliance is the most popular faction for tournament play, it has the best RMP racials(Rogue Mage Priest, one of the strongest 3v3 combos).

You'll get a decent advantage from playing a Blood Elf Mage because of their racials skills

I'm a Draenei mage, which has a +hit racial, very beneficial. Did i mention i melt faces to?

I'm starting to dislike mages.

Either I die in a few hits or I'm sitting on the floor.

When will survivability go up and down time due to lack of mana go down?

Or would rolling a lock solve the issue?

Mages are really a bitch to level at start, really. I'll get better around near 30, just grit your teeth and endure it for now because mages are really fun at end game.

Hah! I just saw Wowhead's mage forums and there's at least 3 threads about how mages are awful at start.

I feel like mage is a very good starting class tbh. Can kill everything before it reaches you. Polymorph from level 10 onwards + frost nova from almost the beginning. You can have a lot of control and there's plenty ohshit skills. (Warlock will not have any ohshit spells. Fear will almost always cause you to get more problems)

Put frostbolt rank 1 in your bars at all times, it's a fast slow and will help you kite melee mobs if things go wrong. Better yet just use frost nova (has a bigger range than you would expect) or just polymorph.
All of those skills become available fast and I think they're really good skills to run away from mobs and eat/drink up again. Don't really agree that mage is an awful class at start.

Rolling a warlock will lower your downtime significantly. A well played affliction warlock will have 0 downtime, starting from somewhere in their 30s.

mage untill 20 is hell.

Soon enough you'll be able to 2hit mobs, kill everything on sight. And they look cool to, check my SS in the screenshot thread.
