The way my parents taught it to me, it's a way to experience how poor/homeless people live. Kinda "feel" for them. (Probably back then,it was the desert travelers that traveled for days with no food/water) And the other period is to experience how people feel when they blow themselfs up? ...

What is the purpose of feeling how poor people feel when they don't have food and @ the end you eat yourself almost to death. Its typical Moslim... if they give all the food to the poor people i understand what they want to say. But in this way they only feel how the poor people feel and don't help...

serious perspective: clearly the people building the bar are being total assholes, but at the same time they are prooving a point. if those that are building the mosque/rec. center are actully looking to encourage tollerance and build up a community than they probably wont exibit a bunch of intoler...
